We just bought a Subaru Forester this spring and love it! The new safety technology, eye sight, is pretty great, and I think it tests as well as volvos now on safety if you get that feature.
My husband and I were in the same boat so after a ton of research we decided on the Honda HRV. It is smaller than the CRV, but still has good storage!! You can only buy them new (2016) but you can get great amenities (like back up camera, lane watch, and heated seats) for only $21,000. Oh and sometimes we get 45 mpg!!! The car's overall average gas mileage is 35, but it is seriously the best of both car and SUV worlds!
