Trouble TTC

My first IUI scheduled with Clomid - Questions!

Hello!

I am currently taking Clomid 100 with an IUI procedure to follow.

My last cycle was Clomid 50 with HCG Trigger shot that ended in BFN and really late ovulation (which was beyond frustrating) AF showing up at 25 Days Passed the trigger shot. So my question is why didn't I ovulate within 48 Hours and what will change for the IUI which is ALL ABOUT TIMING!!

DX: PCOS (no cysts)

History:

Cycle 1 Clomid (50mg):  Monitored with 17mm follicle ovulated on my own - BFN
Cylcle 2 Clomid (50mg): July - August 20 -  Monitored with 22mm follicle - HCG Trigger shot - AF arrived DPO 24
Cycle 3 Clomid (100mg): Monitored with 26mm - no trigger - AF arrived DPO 13

Re: My first IUI scheduled with Clomid - Questions!

  • What is your diagnosis?  If you had an HCG shot,   it's extremely unlikely, almost impossible that you ovulated late.   You either had a longer LP due to higher progesterone from your stimming meds or from your original dx if it's PCOS, etc.

  • I've heard of someone else having a similar issue (late ovulation as per feeling and BBT). What I've read is that there seems to be different dosages for the trigger...not sure whether thay would help. I would ask your RE how he explains that and what's the plan on fixing it. Good luck!

There aren't huge variations on HCG dosages, and it doesn't take much for it to force ovulation.  If you take an Ovidrel shot, you are 99.9% likely to ovulate within 24-48 hours. You can't go by feeling for ovulation because a strong ovulation can cause pangs before, during and days after the actual event.  I know this because I had almost daily ultrasounds and knew exactly when I ovulated - and they don't correspond anywhere as nearly to feelings and BBT as I thought they did.

Additionally BBT's are discouraged when you are stimming and on treatment because they can produce confusing results.  For example, if you're on progesterone support it will shoot up your temps and make FF think that you ovulated later than you did.

  • So are you saying the shot worked and I did ovulate - however my progesterone level was too high (from Clomid) which took a while to come back down for AF to show up?

  • @linne23 AF comes later for a lot of us after stimming due to high progesterone, and some of us go on progesterone support which carries it even further.  If you have PCOS, it's also quite possible that the PCOS has something to do with the lateness of a period.   You should give your RE a call to have it explained better, to put your mind at ease.   You also can ask for more ultrasounds around ovulation, just for your own piece of mind.
