Re: **The Everything Random Thread for April Mamas**

  • So I just realized that I forgot to cancel our Audible subscription (grr), so I have 5 credits (approx. 1 per book) to use before I can cancel. Any recommendations for books/series that are appropriate enough to listen to in the car with a toddler? We've done Harry Potter and have Sherlock Holmes and Chronicles of Narnia. I'm thinking LOTR/Hobbit, but would love other ideas!

I have six. lol I totally forgot too.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • @thaisac1 4D is actually included in our a/s, so we have seen the little missy, it's just been a while. I don't know of any places around here for elective scans and my DH, the every logical and practical man that he is, would never be able to justify getting a scan done just because. Especially since she'll be here in just a few weeks!

Speaking of DH...practical, logical, especially when it comes to money (and me maybe being a little less so)...I went shopping for food and prizes my friend's baby shower last night. DH has not been thrilled about me hosting this event as it is, primarily due to the expense but also because of his feelings about my friend. Anyway, I managed to spend only $70 on almost all the food and prizes I need (still need to get eggs and milk for some breakfast casseroles on Friday before), with my bill totaling $80.13 including a few things I needed to get for us. When I got home his first question was "How much?" I responded $80 and his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. Shut up DH, do you even have a single clue how FANTASTIC that is to host a party for around 30 people? Full brunch? (Aside from the mimosa bar my friend's mom is putting together). And prizes for the games, and some decor items...add that to the $12 I spent to make favors (again...for over THIRTY people!), and the $10 I will be spending on balloons on Saturday?  Serious SERIOUS cheapskate party planner here, and it will be great! I even made and printed all the game cards myself, no expense there, printed up some DIY decor too. I was a huge cheapskate...sorry if he doesn't have a clue what it costs to throw a shower >:)

Agree that it is a bit late in the game now... But maybe for future pregnancies. :) Interestingly, my husband is the one who has requested the non-medical 3D US... When we have medically-indicated US, I understand everything but he doesn't as he is not in the medical field. They focus on specific body parts and measurements, and he doesn't quite understand everything. At the 3D they just focus on showing you pretty pics, so my husband loves it as it helps him feel even more connected with baby.
We had one at 17 weeks when my parents were visiting to find out the sex, and another at 26 weeks when my mom was visiting over new years. Then my husband asked to see him one more time, so we had another one at 33 weeks. :D
  • I love the people that work at the coffee place I go to. It's a drive through but they are always so friendly and I told one of them I was pregnant and she didn't act like she judged me at all. I'm surprised they are rude anywhere because in my experience at coffee places in general, coffee shop workers are the nicest for some reason and I have repeatedly wondered how they are so nice all the time.
The people at the Starbucks I go to occasionally are super friendly but there's a lot of chatter about baristas refusing to serve regular coffee to pregnant women. 1) You're a barista, not an MD and 2) decaf coffee is worse for us becaus of the process of decaffeinating. I would lose my mind if someone made a snide comment to me about drinking caffeine, especially since it's far more detrimental in early pregnancy when you can't tell someone is KU.
But I agree - usually the people working in coffee shops (especially mom n pop shops) are super friendly and can actually carry on some interesting conversation. I love doing my homework there.
  • I found out that baby is measuring right on for almost 34 weeks at my appointment today! After hearing that he was measuring three weeks behind at my last appointment, that was wonderful news. But seriously, fundal height went up 5 cm in 12 days! I knew I wasn't crazy when I told DH I could literally feel my belly growing. Ouch. He's also head down - hopefully he stays that way!

I got a venti latte on my way back to work. No shame (or comments from the barista). I must have looked like I needed it (awake since 2:30 AM).
  • I've only had coffee here and there, sometimes regular sometimes decaf and I don't judge and feel like do what you want! I feel like so many of these things are 'wives tales' and the way we handle medical precautions in the US is to create a fear factor because they don't trust people to make good judgments.  I've had a small glass of wine on a few occasions this pregnancy and I've done it at home because I know I would get judged to high heaven for it if I ordered at a restaurant.  I feel judged walking around with a starbucks cup of hot chocolate as it is. People are twatwaffles.

Unrelated rant: after weeks of beautiful 70-80 degree weather, it's set to rain on the day of my shower. I love the rain, but now we have to move everything indoors. It will be 'cozy' to say the least. WTF. Seriously?????? I'm writing 472897364 to-do lists right now.

I wanted to get a 3d u/s done a few weeks ago. My dr. office offers it. It's not covered under insurance but I was going to go to one of those boutique places. SO didn't want to do it. He said he wants to see what she looks like when she gets here. He said it's like peeking on your xmas presents....um...I always peek on my xmas presents. It's what I do. But I obliged. On top of that, baby girl tends to be folded up at every single u/s since about 20 weeks. It would honestly be a waste of money anyway. lol

Today was the first u/s I've had where she didn't have her feet covering her face, instead it was her arms and hands. Little turd. lol I did see he mouth opening and closing for a second though.

  • What the heck little niece/nephew? Why must you be so darn ridiculous? With all the somersaults you're doing you better become a gymnast or something! My SIL was stuck at 3cm, found out that the baby went breech AGAIN! So she's being taken in for a C-section as I type this. She'll be the first C-section in DH's generation on his side of the family, which includes 11 other births!

All the best to your SIL!!! Predictions: gymnast, xtreme skate boarder, parkour-afficionado, olympic ski high-jumper, olympic diver <3
  • I "ate lunch with" Miles Teller today. I don't know who he is other than what I read on his IMDB. lol He's adorable though. I work in a medical facility that was a former hospital. We don't utilize one of the wings so we rent it out periodically for filming. Atlanta is the filming mecca right now. Any way, the cast/crew ate in our cafe today and he sat at my table. I didn't know who the hell he was til later on so I guess it doesn't count.

  • I just had my massage. I haven't actually felt relaxed in so long it almost feels uncomfortable... She did say that I should consider seeing a chiropractor for my shoulders because I have a huge knot that she couldn't work out (yeah I know, it's been there for about seven years now >.<) and she did some stuff to my belly that has made a huge load of difference! Also, my baby is apparently huge. >.> She started feeling and said there is like all baby there! I was expecting more give, but that is ALLLLLL baby!

    Um... K? Like I hadn't noticed?

Whatever. I feel amazing. Not going to bitch lol
MINE IS ON SATURDAY!!!  I can NOT wait!

I'm glad you are feeling relaxed.

  • I would have a cup of coffee every day if it didn't do terrible things to my stomach and keep me awake at night. I didn't even like coffee until like a year and a half ago and when I started drinking it, I discovered it makes me feel sick so I shouldn't drink it anyway. Alas! :(
  • I had my GBS test today and there was no backdoor violation. I consider that a win. I was also hoping to be dilated to like a 5 or something (I know it means nothing but still...) and I was a measly 1. Insert thumbs down emoji.

  • Why do you expect you'd be dilated already? Because of previous babies?
    image
  • And how do they check?

Ya'll are scaring me a little.
    image
  • @yodiggity It can actually be very common to be dilated a cm or two well before labor. It can be common to not be dilated until labor either. Neither way means anything about when you'll go into labor though. They check the only way you can check the cervix, likely the same way you've seen on movies and TV. Get all up in your business. You can decline to have internal checks in the weeks leading up to delivery, because like both myself and @CCLow87 said, it really doesn't mean anything about when you're going into labor.

@yodiggity The process can be a long one and sometimes starts wayyyyy early. I was a 1 at 36 weeks with my first too, and maybe a 2 by 39 weeks.

They check by sticking fingers up there. It really does mean absolutely nothing though. A mom can be long and closed and deliver in two hours. Another mom can be a 4 at 30 weeks and deliver 12 weeks later at 42 weeks. I'm really not sure why they even check.

Also, some STMs are always a 1, never really closed closed.

@imrachellea I know it! Less to go when it gets here!

  • My midwife will not check until 39 weeks if I want it, but they usually wait until 40. Basically because like PPs have said, it doesn't mean anything and they don't want to worry the preggos/give false hope, etc.

It also carries a risk of infection, breaking waters prematurely or causing contractions from stimulating/irritating the cervix. Lots of negatives, little/no benefit. But yes, I still let her check me, I wasn't feeling argumentative. lol My midwife, though, doesn't check at all and only when you request it during labor.

  • My ob checks the cervix every week 35 weeks on.
It doesn't hurt its just kinda uncomfortable for a second ( so I've heard from patients).

  • I'll repeat that dilation before labor means nothing. Ive always been at least three cm before labor started, and have had both crazy short and crazy long labors.

  • I'm not sure why, but I actually got an epidural because the cervix checks hurt me so much during labor. I asked my OB about this a few weeks ago and he told me that it may have been just because being in labor made my cervix swollen and more sensitive than usual...I'm praying it isn't as bad this time because, come on...an epidural for checking my CERVIX and not contractions? How much of a wimp am I??

  • So there's this one spot on my ribs, about an inch or so below where my bra band would be on the right side, that is unbelievably tender. Even just having my shirt rub up against it is painful, like the sort of pain you get when you poke a bruise really hard.  There's no external mark; no rash, no visible bruise, no nothing, just pain, and it's been this way for days.  What the heck?!

Probably from LO kicking. Mine has been jabbing my in the ribs since Thursday or Friday. Pretty much in the same spot, just below the tit. On Sunday, while I wasn't wearing a bra, I could see my tit jiggle every time she kicked me in that spot and SO joke that she was kicking me in the tit.

@AGK2015 is it possible you cracked a rib at some point? Or even just bruised it? A good sneeze or cough or maybe even a good kick from baby at night that you don't remember could do that.

I fell in the bathtub several years ago (yes, there was alcohol and another person involved) and hit my ribs pretty hard on the side of the tub - they hurt for weeks even though nothing was broken. :s

Suppose it's possible, though I definitely don't remember it... I haven't been coughing or sneezing much (thank goodness) but Lord knows she's been thrashing around in there violently enough that nothing would surprise me.

Seriously, this child had better be prepared to put me in a really freaking swanky nursing home one day, because I'm pretty sure I'm earning it.
  • DD1 is driving me nuts. Grilled ham and cheese sandwiches were something she would without a doubt eat. Tonight it's totally unacceptable. So now there's a pile of deconstructed sandwich pieces as she tries to just eat the buttery bread without getting ham or cheese in her mouth. Ugh, toddlers
