Negative blood type?

Does anyone else here have a negative blood type and have to get the Rhogam shot? I will have to get and have not yet. I've heard it being administered multiple ways ... IV, butt/hip shot, shot in the arm. Can you share your experience? What should I expect?

I have A- type....the shot is not a big deal really..shot in the butt/hip twice normally unless u have experienced bleeding...honestly unless u r deathly afraid of needles, then its a walk in the park...g/l

It's not a big deal. Administered intramuscularly. So either in your butt, leg or arm. Not through IV. Usually around 28 weeks and again within 72 hours after giving birth.

Thx I am afraid of needles but overcoming through this pregnancy so I imagine I'll have to manage. I didn't know you had to get it twice. Thanks for giving me heads up.

Usually the rhogam is given in a larger muscle, but some nurses might deviate. I'm O- and had two shots. It's like stabbing yourself by accident with a safety pin, you know. Shocking at first, sore later, done.

I had it in my arm and received the flu shot in the other. It was fine, and I remember the flu shot hurting more. Only needed the one though because DS was also Rh negative.

I haven't had mine yet this pregnancy but I had it twice during my first pregnancy. They gave it to me in my arm and it felt like a bee sting. It wasn't that bad but I'm still not looking forward to it this time.

I had it....its not bad at all. I didn't feel it and was not sore afterwards. You'll be just fine! It's super easy

I had it last night because I had bled a little. It's not a big deal, but it took a few hours because first they had to send my blood to the lab and then administer the shot after they got the results. Not sure if that's standard, but bring something to entertain yourself with just in case.

I had the rhogam shot at 6 weeks due to excessive bleeding. I felt extreme fatigue but not sure to blame it on the shot. It is made from at least 400 donors. I am not a fan of getting it at 28 weeks unless I need to due to bleeding. I wish I did not need the shot.

I got labwork done to check RH factor in baby which will be positive so I will need shot when baby is born. I am opting out at 28 weeks.

Sorry, but why are you "opting out"?

It's fine they give an injection at 28 weeks ish and again after delivery. They also take blood more often to check your antibody levels. I am O- and this is my second pregnancy. It really is nothing to worry about

You say they take blood more often when do they start doing that? I'm 19 weeks today and the ONLY time I've had my blood checked is my very first appointment at 4 weeks. (We wanted to confirm the pg since family was coming to town)

I'm O neg ... I bled a little at week 7 and got the shot. Not a big deal.

Im A- and had to have Rhogam. No biggie really just like any other shot. I have to get two more, one at 22 wks and after birth depending on if DS is negative or positive.

I got lucky, and I'm A+. And baby hasn't shown any issues, either. So, I don't know much about that shot. But I do the tetanus shot, since I had to have one of those about 2 weeks ago. Ouch! :-??

Thanks ladies for the input. I understand it a little better now. My doctor told me today you only have to get a second shot after child is born if your child has a positive blood type. I will say these negative blood type issues fascinate me a bit. My mother and father both had negative blood types. My mom delivered all of my seven siblings and me at home naturally. The shot was invented in 1968 so if my mom hadn't married a negative blood type she would have most likely had miscarriage after miscarriage or delivered children with disabilities. This is why people had to get blood tests before getting married. Thank God for modern science.

My First pregnancy was over 8 years ok and I can't remember what they did there but this one I have had blood taken at each visit. I am in Asia now though... Maybe they are more cautious here?!

I always thought they did that to make sure you weren't related. I just googled it and the website said it was to test for Rubella and STI's.

You are right! ;-) I didn't call that one correctly but my facts about when shot was invented ect. is correct. Thanks for the update.

I didn't look into the shot at all. I was really just curious why they (used to) do blood tests. I honestly thought it was to make sure you weren't related. 

Side note - I went to the perinatologist yesterday for a high risk ultrasound and genetic testing and one of the questions on the form was "Are you and the baby's father related?"

I'm still waiting to find out if I'm negative or not. but if it's anything like my depo provera shots then it's not going to be that bad at all.. i usually got the shot in my hip/butt & i found it less painful than getting it in the arm.
plus you only have to get 2 Rhogam shots, so that's not bad at all! after getting all these blood tests those are going to be a walk in the park, lolol
