2nd Trimester

Single umbilical artery

I am a type 1 diabetic, and last year had a few issues with my blood sugars. Today, as a precaution, I was sent to have a more detailed ultrasound done. I'm 16 weeks, (1st pregnancy) and they found that the baby only has one artery in the umbilical cord instead of 2 as they normally
do. They went over all the possible risks and defects that could happe , and told me the risk was low right now. I'm still really worried..I did the bloodwork today to test for more in depth answers, and if that comes back negatively then an amniocentesis will be done. I was wondering if any other moms had experienced this yet or before in any other pregnancy? I'd very much appreciate advice/just talking with someone going through the same issue. Thanks in advance!

Re: Single umbilical artery

  • I haven't gone through it but am also carrying a baby with a SUA. It is scary and Dr Google is not your friend. We have a follow up sono on Monday to check kidneys, heart, and urinary tract. We will also have a fetal echocardiogram at 24 weeks and start NSTs and BPPs at 28 weeks through delivery.

More than most of the time a SUA is an isolated anomaly with no other problems. So, that is what we are hoping for with this bebe too.
