Dairy/soy restrictions

hey ladies just starting dairy and soy-less diet ugh but doing it for my LO... Just wanted to see what foods you guys are surviving on and maybe even some good recipes possibly :) what are your staples? Any good brands out there?

Have you seen difference in your LO with this diet ?
TIA

Re: Dairy/soy restrictions

  • I'm on the extreme end of the spectrum, so I can't really weigh in on just dairy and soy. But I have seen huge improvements with the diet I am on.

You'll be better off to stick to whole, unprocessed foods, at least for the first few weeks to make sure you don't eat it on accident. But brands I know are good include Enjoy Life, Chex, and Kind (but some of the products with chocolate have dairy). I like almond/coconut milk blend instead of real milk (Silk, Almond Breeze, Trader Joe's). Rice milk is terrible, hemp seed milk is pretty good. You're going to become very familiar with your grocery store's health food section. :)

I'll try to put together a few recipes and post later. Good luck!
  • Thank you :) Im bummed I have to do this lol bc I went gluten free for 2 years which helped my ibs but just started transitioning back and was enjoying eating a lot of things again ugh

  • I'm on the no dairy train as well. I will say so many things I never imagined having dairy in them actually does. I like silk as well. I could use some recipes too!
  • @paige0704 I've been GF on and off for a few years. I feel better, but damn do I love food. Most of my recipes are or can be GF as well. DH thinks that LO'S GI problems are directly related to mine. Which could be the case. Poor girl.

I would be for a weekly restricted diet thread to share recipes and gripes in general. Do you have a slow cooker? I'm going to try to use mine more when I go back to work.

I'm dairy free as well, and I end up eating a lot of chicken/rice/veggie combinations for dinner.
2 things that help with my junk food cravings are: chips and salsa, and Oreos. Thank goodness for oreos!

ETA: as I was typing this reply I just saw a commercial for silk dairy free yogurt. . . I might look into it
  • Silk is the best. Love the dark chocolate almond milk.

I was fully dairy free for two weeks but now I'm having foods with traces of dairy (processed stuff) and a serving of cheese about every other day and so far LO is good. I love cereal and it's not the same with almond milk sadly. I could probably eat more to wean her back on but she's got bad reflux and what we're pretty sure is colic and i don't want to deal with the consequences if it goes badly.

Trader Joe's has awesome coconut milk ice cream. It's so creamy I can't tell the difference. Far superior to the coconut and cashew milk stuff they have at walmart. I eat a lot of cinnamon pop tarts too bc it's easy one handed. And I'll make a turkey sandwich with a dairy free salad dressing for flavor in lieu of cheese. Also lots of eggs. I've been using fake butter for toast.
  • theres a dairy free cheese called daiya(or something like that) which is apparently good for melting with, like if youre making pizza or quesadillas. ive never tried it myself but i used to follow a lot of vegans on tumblr.
i think vegan recipes could actually be a great help, as they are dairy free. just add meat in where they put tofu or another soy product/meat alternative.

if you like ice cream you can use bananas in place, just google banana ice cream, or you can freeze juice into sorbet.

    Great idea!

I'm no-dairy (though I haven't been strict about trace dairy), but still using soy.  I've actually been using milk alternatives for years, so they seem normal to me. Just have to keep unsweetened versions on hand for use in savory recipes.

Asian recipes, like stir fry and some curries are good as cheese is not as heavily consumed. Maybe use like a pesto or peanut sauce for pasta, instead of something cream/cheese based. Guacamole can be a nice, creamy substitute for cheese. I don't really cook with meat, so I don't know if I'll really have good recipes to share, but will give it some thought.

Yes we should def do a thread there are prob a lot of ppl who would benefit...I've been using the crockpot almost every day but now have to look at sauces and spices I've been using :/ bummer bc I just found this delicious Korean bbq sauce that's been my savior and just looked and saw it has soy I'm silently dying inside :( The soy is way harder than the milk for me bc I did no dairy a while back before doing gluten free and soy is just in everything processed really!
  • @Sammy K by the way what are all your restrictions?

I'm not even dairy-free and I just bought a pack of double-stufs. I blame you.

I didn't know oreos were dairy free...but to me they're not going to be worth it if I can't dunk them in a cold glass of actual cow milk. Boo.

Oreos are vegan!!! And sooooo good dunked in vanilla almond milk!

@paige0704 Right now, it's easier to say what I can eat: lamb, sweet potatoes, rice, and zucchini. Now that my LO basically has a new and smiley personality, I can add foods back in, one every 4 days. Tomorrow I'm trying turkey. I might be a rebel and have chamomile tea, too. :)

I know dairy, black beans, and blueberries are all problematic. I would guess gluten as well, since I know it causes problems for me. I'm following an "anti-colic" diet for what to try next. I will probably avoid dairy until the 6 month mark. Boo.

It really sucks for me, but the change has been so dramatic it's worth it.

God bless you, you poor thing.

I was reading a baby food cookbook last night and it was saying that they should start getting tame cow's milk products, like hard cheeses and butter, as soon as they can handle consuming it once they start solid foods. I wonder if she'll tolerate that or absolutely lose it once that happens. But I guess it's suggested for their protein/calcium intake. I'll probably not introduce those until 8 months, even though I plan to start baby foods at 6. I'll start with fruits and veggies and add in some meat before I get dairy involved. I'm going to be so sad for LO if she winds up having a legit cow's milk allergy. DH's cousin has one, and it sounds terrible.

    Oh my that's rough
  • What the heck this app won't post my whole response ugh I just wrote a whole thing and it posted 4 words grr
  • I haven't cut out dairy completely, but I've reduced my intake and have noticed improvements so I plan to continue with it.

Replaced our regular milk with almond milk, vanilla is my fav. And the banana. 'ice cream' is great (frozen bananas, peanut butter, vanilla), the trick is to leave it in the food processor long enough that the consistency gets just right.

Loved the other suggestions on this thread, and now feeling less guilty about the high Oreo intake.
  • Even with her current issues, I plan on introducing dairy products after 6 mo. I really hope she grows out of all of this.
  • I was dairy free and ate lots of salads packed with veggies, and fruit. If you look very closely into the ingredients labels, you can find bread that is dairy free...but when they threw soy into the mix for my diet I had a harder time since most breads have soy flour or soy oil. I ate eggs and toast for breakfast (just be sure to research the bread). I also found snyders gluten free pretzels for snacking (not sure if they contain soy). For dinner I ate meat, veggies, and grains (think rice or quinoa). I also made a quinoa dish with lentils, rice, dried cranberries, almonds, and a light dressing that was good for lunches. Oatmeal is safe, but if you like cold cereals be sure to check the labels...some granolas or the healthier cereals are safe with almond milk (I liked the unsweetened silk brand). To satisfy my sweet tooth I enjoyed the coconut milk (so delicious brand) dairy free "ice cream"...frozen dessert. I also ate jello as a treat...dairy free but I cannot say for sure if it is soy free. This diet was described to me as "vegan with a side of meat" because vegan foods are dairy free...be careful of soy though. Good luck!
  • Holy hell the soy restriction is killing me! I never realized how almost everything has soy!!!! I can't believe it! The dairy is pretty easy to handle but the soy jeez it's hard...basically everything needs to be cooked from scratch i just hope I don't hurt my supply bc this is way less then what I was eating :/
  • Bummer that you have to cut out soy too. Dairy is way easier. My approach to this has been to focus on what I can eat and not to think about what I can. I basically built a new diet from the ground up with foods I knew were okay. Rice, fresh veggies, fresh fruit, pb&j. I realize my case was way easier because it was just dairy. I hope you guys can adjust diets sooner than 6 months. I wanted to expose LO to some casein to build tolerance and i wanted more fat in my diet so i can keep up with nursing so started with a serving of cheese ever other day a week ago. So far so good, LO is 3 months this week. I won't drink a glass of milk for a while. LO is a peaceful baby and I don't want to go back to screaming moster! Hang in there everyone, this is tough.

  • I only have a diary restriction. Sounds much tougher to add to the restriction list. :-q
I'm not much of a milk drinker, it's cheese that is a bummer. I accidentally had half of a protien bar that had milk in it (I don't know why I didn't check the ingredients, totally spaced). Just confirms our suspicions! LO hadn't been that fussy since I cut dairy 5 weeks ago.
Almond milk with a hint of honey has been great as a milk replacement for cooking or for coffee at home. A must try at Starbucks: cold brew iced coffee with French vanilla flavor and coconut milk. I was super excited to have coffee again after being pregnant. It used to make me sick. Then I find out I had to cut dairy, so not stopping me from my coffee!

Some recipes I've tried (thank you Pinterest):
    https://www.eatgood4life.com/strawberry-coconut-overnight-oats/
Good to make ahead of time, especially when you only have one hand to eat. I just exclude the chia seeds. They freak me out.

    https://lacreativitedelafille.blogspot.com/2013/07/chewy-peanut-butter-oatmeal-cookies.html?m=1
Pretty good! I used chunky peanut butter.

    https://www.sugarfreemom.com/recipes/personal-sized-baked-oatmeal-with-individual-toppings-gluten-free-diabetic-friendly/
I just subbed almond milk for regular milk. I like that I didn't have to use flour, milk, or sugar!

Anyone else have any recipe successes?
  • Tacos are an easy one, just make sure you check the label if you use any seasoning mix. I always top with avocado or guac since I can't do cheese or sour cream. I like breakfast tacos, too, just use eggs instead of meat.

Bacon and eggs on an English muffin. If you bake the bacon in the oven, it saves well in the fridge (and is way less greasy). Cook a whole package on the weekend and have 1-2 pieces each day.

Chipotle is a good fast food place since you can customize your food. Although I've never checked their website to see if there is any soy in any of their meat marinades.
  • @Sammy K can you eat oats? I made up a cookie recipe that was basically all I ate for the first crazy weeks of breastfeeding when I couldn't figure out what I could safely eat. Prune puree, oats, oat bran, eggs, vanilla, brown sugar, and dairy free chocolate chips. I did have 1/4 cup flour in it but I think you could cut it out and use more finely ground oats. Basically homemade Bakers Breakfast Cookies. I think you are a triathlete too so perhaps you know them.

  • @henrytviii I haven't tried oats or eggs yet, but I have a feeling they will be ok. It seems to be dairy, beans, and high fiber fruits and veggies. I'm unsure about soy and gluten, so they're towards the bottom of the list of foods to reintroduce. But I have a bunch of different GF flours. I like cooking and messing with recipes, I just need more than 6 ingredients!
  • Okay here goes. This is my current double batch recipe. 1 cup butter is the original but substitute 1/2 prunes pureed in 1/4 cup hot water, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, 2 eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla. Add 2 1/2 cups oats, 1 cup oat bran, 1 cup flour (could cut some or substitute) 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking power, 1 teaspoon baking soda, a whole bunch of sea salt (but I was going for sea salt chocolate chip.cookies so use your judgement!), 1-2 cups chocolate chips. Make big cookies. Bake at 350. Hard part is how long to cook them, they seem to take forever. I think my last batch was 17 minutes. I keep planning to try this with peanut butter to make pb&J cookies.

Whew! I did drink that whole beer and this was hard to type out!

  • This is a really fun blog and everything is soy and dairy free. The desserts are pretty indulgent too

  • I'm soy and dairy free since July 4th -- the change in Gracie is huge and worth it. No mucus or blood in diapers. Nice yellow poops. No more spitting up, much less fussy.

I eat eggs, almond milk, almond creamer, turkey sausage, salmon, fruit, vegetables, tuna salad, nuts, no dark green leafies and no beans (even though scientifically beans shouldn't cause any fussiness in her, my husband and I watched after I ate baked beans and she was a mess the next day.). Lots of almond butter, peanut butter.

I lost almost all my baby weight and I gained 35 lbs. I have 6 to go and it's been 11 weeks.

    Win win.
  • Before this, I used to live off milk, kefir, yogurt, cheese cheese cheese!! Tofu etc.

But as for cooking foods? Ground turkey tacos, grilled fish and meat. No real recipes
  • @marinamarina I noticed the same thing with black beans. I don't care what the research says, it made LO miserable for the next 2 days.
  • DS had a pretty obvious lactose intolerance early on. We had him on nutramigen and I was pumping to keep up my milk supply but he was doing so much better on the formula that we kept him on it. We didn't want to take any chances that I would accidentally eat something that would upset his stomach again.

Well now DH and I have started the whole30. It's a dairy free, soy free, sugar free and grain free diet. I thought it was going to be so difficult to do, but it's actually pretty easy. They have a cook book, but as long as I stick to fresh veggies and fruit and meat there's really no way to mess up. Had I know this was so easy I would have went back to nursing being confident that I wouldn't accidentally eat anything I shouldn't. But anyway, I recommend this plan to anyone. The food in the cookbook is so good and usually very easy and quick to make. Good luck!
  • @MrsMassimilla I love Whole30. Their book is really readible too. Even though I do eat some raw dairy, rice.. I go back to this now and again as a reset and to see how I'm tolerating certain foods
  • How I felt with diet restrictions
  • Wanted to see if any of you have seen this type of mucus in diaper...she passed gas and popped out a mucus ball today? I attached picture...no fever or anything abnormal just this weirdness...thinking related to an allergy good thing I changed diet if so
  • I haven't seen anything like it but our pedi said blood or mucus in their stool is a sign of an allergy. Sorry mama, it's probably something you ate.
  • @paige0704 - I had to take my son to a GI specialist for blood in his stool...he always had mucus texture to his poop which they said was indicative of food allergies...talk to your doctor
  • Thanks ladies...def calling pedi in morning just in case to make sure nothing else besides an allergy
  • So here I was feeling good about having this figured out. Then I made a few dumb mistakes: introduced oats, but the oatmeal I had also had soy protein, then DH made lamb with Moroccan spices, which gave us both gas. LO is having traumatic gas, so which is it? Oats, soy, or spices? Time to hit the reset button. Argh.

Oh man that stinks I'm sorry you have had all these restrictions bc it's hard enough with just two things that I'm doing...it was prob just the combo of all of them :/ I hope baby's digestive system starts to mature for you soon and things get better!
