Diaper Help!

still haven't bought diapers yet and I'm due in 2 weeks. Wondering how many to get. I've been told not to get too many newborn diapers because they may not fit for long so wondering would 1 box of newborn and 1 box of size 1 be reasonable to start? I also heard sometimes baby doesn't like certain type. Also should I pick up butt paste (or any other suggestions?) now in anticipation.

Re: Diaper Help!

  • With DD1 I didn't buy any diapers ahead of time and had people bring them to the hospital when they came to visit once I knew her size.   Newborns go through up to 12 diapers a day if that helps you plan how many to have.

Always good to have something around for sore bottoms.   It's not something you want to be without when you need it.

  • I bought two 40 packs of newborn sizes in two different brands just in case one doesn't work and I also have 1 big box of size 1 with the brand I'm hoping works out. Otherwise I'm going to wait and see
  • I'd definitely start with at least 1 pkg of newborn and 1 of size one like your planning. I also agree you should have diaper cream on hand for when you'll need it. Don't use baby powder, baby could inhale it when put it on and cause breathing problems. For wipes, you can buy some or use a face cloth and water to wash the area, up to you.

  • With my first I used one box of newborn and switched to 1s. For this baby I have two little packs of nb and two boxes of ones
  • I have like 3 or 4 packs of newborn and they have all been opened... They were parts of gifts I got at my baby shower and one friend had extra from her baby so she gave the rest to me. I have huggies, pampers and target brand. I know some of the newborn ones swoop down in the front so it doesn't rub the umbilical cord.
  • I have 2-3 packs of NB and like 5 packs of size 1. I have Luvs and Target Brand, if they don't work for my baby, then I will go back to Target and try to exchange them all. If I can't exchange them, then I have a friend who is due in November, so I will just pass them on.
  • I have one pack of NB (32 diaper package), and haven't bought any size one's yet. I plan on going to get a box this weekend.

  • The hospital usually sends you home with a package of newborn size. Newborns go through diapers very fast in the first weeks (pretty much any time they eat they will poop, so about a dozen per day). Other than size, nb diapers are nice because they have a cutout for the cord stump. I'd have a few packages or one box on hand. You can always buy more.
  • @kanga915 I've never heard of a hospital sending home a pkg of diapers. Most ladies I've spoken to or the hospitals I've been to ask that you bring your own.

  • Our hospital sends you home with diapers, wipes, pacifier and blanket. Every hospital is different.
  • I bought a bunch of newborns in different brands and then a few 1s in different brands, any unopened newborns I'm just going to try to take back and get 1s
  • I feel I received enough, if not more than enough diapers from our shower. I plan to exchange the unused boxes at Babies R Us. I hear they are flexible with this even if you aren't sure if it was purchases there.
  • I have a couple packs of NB and a couple packs of size 1s to start out with.
Side note- my hospital sends you home with formula, blankets, pacifiers, hat, diaper bag with coupons/samples, and diapers.
  • My hospital sends you home with Pampers Swaddlers size 1. I love that brand so I have 1 case of newborn and several cases of size 1 and 2.

We were sent home with huggies little snugglers nb. As a new mom who had no idea what she was doing, they were good because the had a wetness indicator line on the front of the diaper that turned blue when the baby had peed. And also a cut out for the umbilical cord stump. Saved us some stress in the beginning.
  • If your not sure (and who is?) I would wait till the baby gets here. The first day I hear that the baby only need one diaper change and the hospital will take care of it (if you deliver in a hospital) second day you will need two diapers, third day three diapers (I feel like Count Dracula. Lol) so get just one pack of NB and one pack of size 1. (I like to call it leave 1 like in a RP game)
Later it should be something like 1 feeding = 1 diaper. Of course all baby's are different and their could be days where nothing is going right. But I would not worry too much. You don't need to get everything right the first time.
