Opinion or Suggestions - Girl Names

So I love the name Teal but I can't figure out middle names that flows well with it. I also think Marissa is pretty and feminine so we are thinking Marissa Teal unless we can come up with another middle name to go with Teal... Thoughts, suggestions, opinions welcome :)

Re: Opinion or Suggestions - Girl Names

  • My opinion is if you must use Teal, definitely middle name it. It's pretty bad.

  • Teal isn't a name, it's a color. I know a Téa (Tay-uh) if you want similar but a real name. If you have to use Teal, please mn.

  • I'll put it bluntly, Teal is an awful name for your baby.

Marissa is lovely. I guess with Teal in the middle name spot it isn't that bad but I still really dislike it...

Are you maybe just looking for something uncommon, something underused?
  • I apologize if this hurts your feelings (I'm a touchy-feely type, so I feel like I need to preface this with my "honest" posts). Teal is not a name, it's a color. I would see the name and think it's ridiculous, regardless if it's a first or middle name. Marissa however, is a beautiful name.
  • Marissa is lovely. Teal is weird. If you have to use Teal, middle name it. If you just want a color name, might I suggest:

    Marissa Violet
    Marissa Jade
    Marissa Scarlet
    Marissa Rose
    Marissa Ruby

For everyone saying, "Teal is not a name, it's a color," this is not a valid argument. Like someone else mentioned, Violet and Scarlet are also colors and they're perfectly fine names. Exceptions, even, to the "lower class" theory. So, let's not use that as an argument.

Let's just be honest, it's a little out of left field. Marissa is such a sweet name and Teal just... throws it off.

ETA: Although, hey. To each their own. In my opinion, I do not care for this name.

Yeah, but you gotta draw the line somewhere on color names. Same with food names, flower names, etc. No one is going to side-eye a Daisy or a Rose, but name your kid Forget-me-not or Hydrandgea and the tune changes.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I'm just saying that the "it's a color, not a name" or "It's a flower, not a name" argument just isn't valid, in my opinion. There are too many situations, like you and others have mentioned, where a flower or a color is perfectly fine for a name. There are other reasons why a name like that isn't going to be very likable. I guess I just can't articulate a better argument at this moment... I'm struggling. It's just an odd name idea.

  • Teal, being primarily a word for a color, will come with some problems if you use it as a first name.  I see a possibility of pronunciation and spelling problems.

I think it works better as a mn, although it is more "out there" than my own naming style.

    Marissa Teal is totally do-able.

I read this article - not scientific or anything - but some folks surveyed people about women's names, specifically, and they asked people to rate them based on the socioeconomic class they associated with the given name. And what they found was, women who had names that were colors (Amber) or places (Dallas) or revised classic names ( gynifer not Jennifer) were most likely to be associated with lower socioeconomic class than other names. Now, there are exceptions to this - like the name violet or Scarlett. But Teal to me is not one of those exceptions. I feel like you'd be setting up your kid for a life where people are judging her because of her name...and not in a good way. Marissa on the other hand, is a lovely name. What is it about Teal that appeals to you?
Sad! I am an Amber. I officially blame Teen Mom for this.
  • Teal is not a name it is a color :P
  • If I heard Marissa Teal I might think Teal was a family name like mom's maiden name. Doesn't seem like a real name. I second "Marissa Jade" if you like one-syllable color names.
  • My wedding planner was named Steele and she was great, so Teal does not sound super odd to me compared to some names I hear. I actually kind of like it. It is definitely a unique name but not crazy.

The only MN to go with Teal I can think of is like a Teal Grace or somewhere along those names. Marissa is a nice name however I don't really like the flow of Marissa Teal unless it goes with your last name. I would prefer to see just Marissa or just Teal.
