Wet Undies?

Super gross, but is anyone else dealing with increasingly wet undies all the time? Trying to convince myself it's just watery discharge and pee, which is gross but less scary than a fluid leak. I know panty liners are an option, but I feel like they stay wet and cotton undies at least dry. Please tell me I'm not alone. (PS I am going to call midwives tomorrow just to be sure I'm not missing something.)

Re: Wet Undies?

  • Are you wiping thoroughly after peeing? Sorry I don't have any other advice. Your midwife should have more answers for you!

  • My physical therapist was asking me if I was having issues with this. She said it's common this late in pregnancy and especially with subsequent pregnancies and is a sign of the pelvic floor muscles stretching. If you are doing them already, really work on those kegals. I've also heard a sign that it's amniotic fluid is if it has a sweet odor as opposed to metallic or ammonia smelling like urine or discharge.

You can always keep in mind with panty liners that you can change them out more frequently as well so it isn't the same damp one sitting there the whole time.
  • I have the same problem! Always scared that it's amniotic fluid.
  • It's completely normal to be having more discharge at this point. I highly recommend cotton/natural/non-scented panty liners and change them often.
  • It only gets worse! The worst part is the days when you think it's more than normal and your OB makes you go in to have it tested. I think I was changing my underoos at least three times a day by the last few weeks with #1!
  • This is happening to me... a lot. I worry like once a week that it's amniotic fluid. So far, for me, my fluid levels have been great, so its clearly fine, just another lovely pregnancy side effect. Definitely worth a call to the mw though to check.
  • It could also be sweat... I notice that if I'm out in the heat, that area gets sweaty realllllly fast these days.
  • @mizuiro007 I have always sweet smelling discharge around my period, because my diet consists of alot of those fragrant foods that will change your down there scents. hahaha That has continued into my pregancy only its every day now, some days its thicker than others.

Your body is doing alot of weird shit. Just keep an open dialogue with your medical professional and you should be a-okey!

  • I'm just sweating! Bring on the baby powder
  • lord yes. Unscented panty liners are saving my life right now. I always leave the house with a small baggie of them.
  • I posted about this last week.  I find it gross and unnerving but I think it is normal.  I find it useful to change my underwear mid day.
  • @kalper did you call your midwife today?

  • I'm 25 weeks along, this issue is very annoying!!! Especially when I'm at work and have to run to the bathroom at least every hour LOL
  • It really does get worse the further along you get. Excess sweat, increased vaginal discharge and bladder leakage all are some of the less glamorous parts of pregnancy. Tack on hemorrhoids and it is a party in your pants.
  • Stop, clench and sneeze.... Doing these out of order can be a recipe for dampness. The heat, sweat and dually named swamp crotch is also always a possibility. The only way to determine between urine, sweat, snail trail and amniotic fluid is a panty liner, change it to avoid lingering dampness

I think for me it's sweatiness or as Nik says, swamp crotch. Gross.
  • I like "snail trail" haha, ew.
  • I swear this discharge has been burning holes through my underwear. I have had to throw away so many pairs during this pregnancy. Literal holes!

Seriously, holes? Now I can't say that's normal.
  • I'm 23 weeks, and this started for me a couple of weeks ago and it is not glamorous! As a matter of fact yesterday I had so much leakiness and wetness that I called the doctor on call and she said if I felt I should that it won't take long to check into the maternity department at the hospital and have it checked out. So I did to be on the safe side that it's not amniotic fluid. It really did only take a half hour they monitored my baby's heartbeat for 12 minutes which was lovely to listen to, then did a speculum exam to take a sample of the fluid. The doctor said there was no fluid anywhere nor mucus so she ruled it as discharge that was soaking my undies. She did say it's always good to get it checked out because amniotic fluid can be the same consistency as the watery discharge and if you're actually leaking amniotic fluid it can be very dangerous.
  • I asked the PA today and she said increased discharge is normal at this point along with "gushing" occasionally, as long as it doesn't have a strange smell. Normal color is clear to white to yellow. Still scary to think it may be amniotic fluid and is difficult to tell the difference!

Wow. Well I guess I have been in the dark. I never thought it was amniotic fluid until I just read this. I had read it's very common so I just bought some panty liners and have been swapping them out. Now I'm going to have to pay a little more attention to it all. He he.
  • I don't think leaking amniotic fluid is all that common. Panty liners help because you can see what it looks like.

    Omg best analogy ever!!!!
  • I didn't end up calling because it seemed better over the next couple of days. Kinda back with a vengeance tonight, so we'll see what tomorrow brings. Seems worse at night and also when I've had to pee really bad. Could I be slowly peeing myself? ew...
  • Yes, if you are not emptying your bladder when you need to go you are likely dribbling urine

  • When you go pee, stand up a little when you think you are done and sit back down. It is likely that you will pee a little more out.

I believe I may be having the same problem. I'm just over 23 weeks And as a first time mom you really don't know what's normal and when you should call your doctor. Late week or so I've been noticing my undies to be slightly damp. Not to the point where I need to change them, but just kinda like I was sweating in them. Now I'm not so sure if it's normal or not? had my ultrasound done last week and baby looked good, my fluid was on the lower end of normal, but midwife didn't seem to concerned about it and said she'd see me next month. I've been trying to drink lots of water more to hopefully get my fluid up. I just want it all to be okay. I guess I need reassurance :)
