Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Food and juice

what age did you give your babies juice and baby food?

Re: Food and juice

  • We only do juice when our boys are constipated (the older ones are 2yr and 4 yr).
DS3 started foods shortly afterhis 4 mo check up and was given the ok to start.

  • We started solids at 7 months old and we don't give juice. My 3.5 year old gets it occasionally though.
  • I'm waiting until at least 6 months for solids, and lo won't get juice until much older.  Juice has as much sugar as pop, so the fruit in her diet will be actual fruit, not juice.
  • No juice for my LO. Milk or water only.

And the AAP doesn't recommend starting solids until 6 months.

Before a year I didn't give any juice save for pear juice when constipated (or prune).

Baby food-- DD took puree's after starting with barley meal around 5 months.
We did baby lead weaning for DS starting at 6 months.

Truthfully, its all about individual readiness. You can start with something like rice cereal or oatmeal to get the act of chewing/swallowing down. Then move on to purees if you want or small bits of table food.

Our babies' individual progressions really don't mean much for you, though. Your baby may have different needs. I know one or two babies in our mom's circle that did not start on any solids until around 9 months. Its just about watching and seeing where your kid is at.

Even now my 2 and 3 year olds don't get full-on juice. I water down any that they get and its usually just OJ for the morning.
