Picturing what your kid will look like

Will any of you be surprised if your baby doesn't look a certain way?
For example, my mom always assumed I'd have blonde curly hair and brown eyes... But when I was first born, I had blue eyes and black hair. She was like, if I didn't watch you come out, I wouldn't believe you were mine lol. My hair ended up turning blonde and curly (in childhood- now it's light brown) and my eyes turned goldish brown. So, she ended up being right.

But, Id be surprised if my baby didn't have blonde curly hair because both me and my husband did as kids. Eyes can go any which way... I have light brown and husband has light blue/greenish. My dad is the only one with brown eyes so he through a wrench in it all, ha.

Anything you'd be surprised about?

Obviously, I will think my baby is gorgeous no matter what :)

Re: Picturing what your kid will look like

  • I'm expecting light eyes and light hair. Only a handful in both sides have brown eyes and dark hair.
  • Loading the player...
  • DD came out with white(yes so blonde it looks white) hair and eyelashes, and still is. It was so unexpected. My hair is dirty blonde and DH is brown. I knew she'd have blue eyes and curly hair cuz both DH and I do. I love her hair and can't go anywhere without comments.
This one I'm convinced will be the opposite, dark hair and olive skin since DD is super fair. But still blue eyes and curly hair
  • With my first I was expecting a baby with hair (I had tons when I was born, and it was dark)... nada. At almost 2 he still isn't anywhere close to needed a haircut and it is fine and light light blonde. His eyes are brown JUST like his dad's which I love (didn't really know what to expect there, mine are very blue). He was also really pudgy which I expected.

Now with this baby I honestly just expect him or her to look just like DS so we'll see! I'm expecting blonde hair again although I have dark hair and it'd be nice if this one resembled me a little more than his/her brother!

I'm expecting blonde hair and blue eyes, but I wouldn't be surprised if the baby had dark hair. Anything but blue eyes would be a surprise. Haha

I love the look of light hair with brown eyes or dark hair with blue eyes. I'm jealous. My eyes and my hair match perfectly. They are both golden brown and I just feel so boring lol.
I mean I like the way I look but I always wish I had blue eyes with my, now, darker hair.

  • I'm Norwegian and our whole family is blonde haired/blue eyed. H was also blonde as a kid so I was expecting a little blonde baby...when the dr pulled dd out he goes "oh, we've got a red-head!" H and I just looked at eachother stunned, it was completely unexpected! Turns out on h's moms side there's a little red hair...dd stayed strawberry blonde until her newborn hair fell out and is now just blonde but what a surprise. With this baby I'm curious to see what traits they have that are unexpected. It'll be fun, and I have no expectations this time haha!

  • I really don't know what it expect. I have dark brown staight hair and green/blue eyes and H has blonde/reddish hair that was curly when he was younger (he now shaves it almost all the way off so I'm not sure what it would be like now) and he has hazle eyes. I'm just so excited to see our first LO and see who's features they have!

  • I expected a baby with medium blonde or dark hair and we hAve a girl with lots of blonde blonde hair!
I guess next one I just anticipate lots of blonde.

Oh if you have a baby with blonde hair when they are born the nurses go crazy... It's a little more rare I guess.

At least she has lots of hair, I see it as a reward did all of the heartburn
  • My family is primarily German, all blue eyes, pale skin, light brown or blonde hair. My sister was born with this massive head of black hair and darker skin. Everyone thought my mom cheated! Our son looks a lot like me so I'm expecting this little girl will too, but I'm secretly hoping she has my husbands hair and skin. I have bluish skin and crazy, frizzy, hard to tame hair.

  • My boys both came out with brown hair and brown eyes but their features look nothing a like. DS1 looks just like me and DS2 looks just like DH. It completely surprised me when DS2 was born and looked nothing like his brother. So I have no idea or expectations for what this one will look like.

  • My H is olive skinned, brown hair & brown eyes. I'm blonde haired and blue/grey eyes. I KNEW our girls would come out looking just like my H.

Even at 2.5, they're still his twin.

I don't know! My H and I have similar coloring--dark blond/light brown hair and light eyes (mine are blue, his are greenish hazel). At birth, I had lots of dark brown hair and he had bright blond hair until he was like 5. It's a mystery!

I have noticed that many babies look more like dad than mom at first, and I think I read somewhere (can't recall where) that this is an evolutionary thing so dads acknowledge and provide for their kids. Haha.

That's so interesting! It does seem like kids look like their dads more often!

I'm one of the only fair skinned blonde in my family.. (I should also note that i was born with a full head of jet black hair, that fell out and grew back toe head white). Both my siblings take after my mom who is Norwegian descent (I've been told there are basically two types is Norwegians, blonde with blue eyes, and Eskimo type - dark hair with dark coloring), we think I take after my paternal grandmother who was Bavarian. H has a little bit of everything in him - dark hair, dark complexion that tans. This baby is doing to be very interesting because both sides of the family have very dominant traits so we'll see whose side wins out!

We are hoping baby gets my hair (very thick while H started graying and balding in his early to mid 20s), and His coordination/athletic ability (because I have neither)!

  • I have light brown hair and green eyes, husband has almost black hair and brown eyes. So I'm not expecting blond hair and blue eyes :) last night I had a super realistic dream that we had the most beautiful baby girl. I was almost crying when I woke up!
  • We both are blonde and blue eyed and got a little blonde haired, blue eyed baby boy. He has a thick head of hair like me and a good mix of our features. I have no idea what to expect for baby girl, I would assume the same but h's parents have black hair as does my Dad.

I have totally read about that! Our first looked JUST like DH. You could see a little bit of me (if you looked close lol), but he was really just my husband in baby form lol. Everyone said he looked like a tiny, baby-man lol!!!

  • I'm not sure what to expect. I have dark brown eyes and brown hair, my husband has blue eyes and blondish hair. Dd1 has blondish red hair and hazel eyes. I think it's from my grandma or perhaps even my husband's mom(she claims dd1 looks exactly like her as a kid).
  • Who knows! My dad is French, and his whole side of the family has dark hair and light eyes. My mom is German, and I got most of her traits - almost black eyes and coppery hair, although I was born with black hair like my dad's. My husband is Eastern European, and his whole family has very blonde curly hair and green eyes. He believes this to be the dominant gene, but we will have to wait and see!

I just read somewhere that green eyes are the most rare color, less than 2% of the population. I'm guessing it's not a dominant trait of it's that rare!

Yes green eyes aren't very common. On my moms side there's always one person in each generation with green eyes. My great aunt, my mom, and my sister are the ones with green eyes. Also blue eyes are a recessive trait so if one spouse has only brown eyes in their family and the other has blue their kids will almost 100% have brown eyes. And if both parents have blue eyes your kids will have blue.
  • Both my girls have their fathers big brown eyes. However, one has brown hair and tan skin the other is blonde and very fair. My H is Latin and I'm very white I wonder if this kid will be a mix of both of us and tie our girls together. I get annoyed when people ask me if the have different fathers. I'm like no one looks like him one looks like me
  • I have no idea what to expect, though I'm assuming brown hair and brown eyes would make the most sense.  My hair is dirty blonde but was dark brown as a kid and my husband's hair is dark brown (though his was blonde as a kid - we switched, haha.)  But there are some redheads in my family tree, so it could go that way, I suppose.  Eye color will probably be brown - husband's are brown, mine are hazel (green/brown) and with our parents it's 3 brown eyes and one set of green eyes.  So green would be the only shock, but I'm assuming brown.

Overall looks wise, I have no idea because my husband and I are kind of opposites in that department.  He's skinny with angular features and a distinctive, large family nose (everyone in his family has it.)  I, on the other hand, am very curvy with soft, round features, large eyes and lips.  As a baby I was very chubby cheeked (I still have chubby cheeks!) so that's always how I pictured my baby, but she could take after dad and be skinnier and more angular, who knows?  Fun to think about though!

One thing I'm fairly sure of - baby will be 8 pounds.  I was 8, my husband was 8, my brother and all three of his sisters were 8.  I would be floored if we had a smaller baby, haha.
  • DH and I both have dark brown hair so anything else would be surprising. We each have a parent who was born with bleach blonde hair, so I could see it happening. Plus I have an aunt with red hair and with all the ginger jokes I've made in my life, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a redhead from karma!
  • My eyes are actually grey so I was trying to research if I carried the same genetic traits as blue and I found this awesome article that explains why our eyes look brown blue or green. It's so interesting! https://genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask232

I also found this article that talks about why two blue eyed parents can have a brown eyed child. There is a link in there to an eye color calculator (wouldn't work on my phone) https://genetics.thetech.org/how-blue-eyed-parents-can-have-brown-eyed-children. Pretty interesting stuff too!

I love science! I find genetics fascinating!

I would be so annoyed too if people asked me that about my children! It's like asking if your pregnancy was planned or not. It assumes so much about the mother and her choices. I feel like men never get these types of questions.

  • My DH has medium brown hair and hazel eyes and so do I. We were both blonde and blue eyed children so I expect the same. I am half Cuban though with Jewish and North African ancestors so who knows! My DH is Polish, Slovak, and German descent and gets crazy tan in the summer. I also am 1/16 Cherokee so it seriously is up in the air. I can't wait to see how beautiful he or she is going to be!
  • I'm expecting a zebra.. just kidding. I have olive-tanned skin and light brown eyes being Indian. H is Dutch, has dark blonde hair & hazel green eyes. I have no idea what to expect..will just have to wait and see.
  • I've been picturing a full head of dark brown hair and light eyes. Hubs and I both have green eyes and I have light brown hair, he has dark. Time will tell!
  • I have fine light brown hair, green eyes, and fair skin. But every first born in the family has had red-hair (on both sides of my family)! We have a ton of bright red-heads!

Hubs has thick medium brown hair, hazel eyes, and olive skin. His hair was blonde as a kiddo though.

I'm thinking this little babe could have just about any color hair and eyes. I just hope it gets daddy's skin tone and legs (he's tall)...I bet those sparkling hazel eyes will be the winner though since light colored is recessive.
  • Both my SO and I have light skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair (though he has no hair anymore, haha- started balding super early so just shaved his head ever since). But, both of his sisters have similar complexions as me and somewhat similar-looking husbands to my SO and both ended up with a few redheads. So, who knows! I'm also the only blonde in my family (other than my half sister, who has a different mom), so who knows where that came from. Guess it will be a toss up! As others have said, healthy is our only goal at this point but will be fun to see what the LO looks like.
  • My husband thinks it will have blue eyes with blonde curly hair. I have brown hair with blue eyes and most everyone in my family is dark so I am thinking brown hair with blue eyes. Either way is going to be beautiful!
  • Our son has blonde hair and blue eyes - my husband has almost black hair/blue eyes and I have dark brown hair and brown eyes, we were definitely not expecting him to keep his blue eyes. My hair was lighter until I was about 6 years old so we are expecting his hair to darken, probably will end up being my color though.

I am guessing this little will look similar but it'd be kind of neat if he/she had brown eyes and dark hair!

I'm really curious about how my fourth baby will look like. I've already been surprised by my third baby. I'm Mexican (mix of European) with dark brown eyes/hair/fair skin and my husband is Puerto Rican with dark brown hair/skin and eyes. My son looks exactly like me and my first daughter is my husbands twin. Our third baby came out with pale skin, blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. She still looks exactly the same. We still joke that she isn't ours and everyone always asks if she's adopted. Or I've had people come up to me and ask if she has a different dad or if her dad is Caucasian. My kids don't look like siblings and my youngest doesn't look like our child. Genetics are crazy. My dad and brother do have pale skin/blonde hair and green eyes but for me to have such a light baby with blue eyes was a surprise. All of my brothers kids have dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He really wanted a colored eyed baby.
  • H jokes about this all the time with me (even before I got pregnant).  I have red hair and freckles and he has dark brown curly hair.  He is convinced our child will look like Ronald McDonald's twin - curly, red, and unruly hair and freckles.  H was born with blonde hair that turned brown and I always had red hair - though it seemed to have gotten darker since when I was a little kid.  We'll have to see if brown hair or red hair wins out with our first LO.
  • Considering that my first looks just like me, I am going to go with dark hair, dark eyes like mine again for this second one. I got some dominant genes! My husband has dark brown hair (even though he had blondish hair when he was young), and greenish eyes. Considering my heritage, it is highly unlikely i have any recessive green eye genes, so I am going to go with brown eyes also.

  • We are having a blazian! I'm full korean with black hair and dark brown eyes and my SO is black and african, like his father was from the Congo Africa... He said he expects the baby to come out super light complexion like just looking tan lol with curly dark hair and dark eyes, sort of Asian though. He desperately wants a boy, because he thinks a girl would be way too beautiful to handle growing up!
