  • Depending on how baby is doing they will let u go into labor at 37-38 weeks. Until then hang in there and be thankful they can stop preterm labor. 36 week old can still have trouble feeding and possibly breathing issues.
  • Umm 37 wks is considered "full term" NOT 39 wks.

Um check your facts. 37 weeks USED to be considers full term. It is now 39 weeks, like I said.

This. But doctors generally won't stop labor after 37 weeks. Though I know 3 women that gave birth at 37 weeks and none of their babies were able to latch and breastfeed. They were otherwise healthy and strong but all three women had to exclusively pump or formula feed because the babies' latching ability wasn't developed enough when they were born.
  • From 37 weeks is classed as full term! ☺

No, 37-38w is early term. 39w is full term. Please read the link above.
  • As PP have said....39w is now considered full term, no longer 37w.

  • Wow. Well all I did was ask a simple question , which was WHY they stop the contractions if I'm having them .. Like I said I'm new to all this so I really don't know, but thanks for the advice

And you got your answer, did you not?

    Wrong. Stop perpetuating incorrect information.

This only relates to the U.S. however and in many countries 37 weeks IS still considered as full term.

Your question was answered. Your baby needs to gestate longer if possible. If you have doubt about what the doctors and nurses are doing you should ask them. But PP is correct, you are a few weeks away from being full term.
  • Not only are you early but if medication or IV fluid can stop your contractions, then you aren't really in labor. You should try to increase your water intake because dehydration can cause painful contractions but labor is not near. Also I would never want an early baby due to pain. Try to take a bath and relax and hang in there. Your baby really needs to grow/finish developing these last few weeks (I'm a L&D nurse)
  • Before 37 weeks they will stop your contractions... Because baby is premature.. Here once your past 37 weeks they will let you labor naturally as well, but babys born before 39 weeks usually need some oxygen and additional support for a little bit !
  • In Canada 37 weeks is full term for those so stubborn to be right. I've been in early labour for 7 days and am now 36 weeks and they won't stop me as I'm progressing very slowly. They told me even if I went into active labour at 35 weeks they wouldn't stop my labour because it's considered late term preemie and baby is more than likely able to function with minimal or no help. And as for stopping labour yes they can as long as it's not ACTIVE labour, early labour can be stopped and is very much the real thing. There's more than one stage to giving birth. Just need to make it another week before I can start trying to move things along quicker being in labour for a week really takes a toll on energy level and sanity. As for baby's not latching that is BS almost every person I know who has had a baby at 36/37 weeks has had no issues feeding. It's a good thing they stopped you from having your baby early but I feel your pain (literally) prolonged labour is not fun, just hang in there a bit longer for babes sake and ignore all the people who are quite rude.
  • Also most baby's after 36 1/2 weeks can breath on their own without support but it all depends on how well your little one is developing, 37 weeks 99% of baby's will breath on their own
