3rd Trimester

Stripping the membranes..how long do I have now!

I am 39 weeks pregnant and saw my OB Friday. She said I was dilated to 3cm and my cervix was soft. She then told me she would strip my membranes to hopefully Jumpstart the labor. Wow, did that ever hurt. I literally had tears in my eyes so I can't imagine how bad labor is going to be for me! Well I haven't had any cramping or contractions. No pain or discomfort. No mucus plug. I was really hoping that I would go into labor fast but it's now Sunday and still nothing. How long can it take after your membranes have been stripped for labor to start? I checked other message boards and every woman seems to have went into labor within 24 hours after this procedure.

  • My sister had hers stripped at 39 weeks and at 40 weeks she was induced due to GD, so I wouldn't give your hopes up.

  • I had my membranes stripped a few times starting at 38 weeks and nothing happened. I was induced at 40w2d only because my water broke. Different strokes I guess

If you haven't started yet from the membrane stripping it probably didn't work, sorry. It usually starts within 24 hours of the OB during it. You can get it done at your next appointment.
  • With my first pregnancy, I had mine stripped twice. Once at 39 weeks, then again right at 40. Didn't work either time. Had babe at 40 weeks and 4 days.

Your baby will come when he/she is ready. Why hurry the process? Baby needs time in there and it is to both of your benefit to not rush it. Try to keep your mind off of it and enjoy the time you have left to still be a little selfish:)

This. Unless there's a medical need for baby to come, let it come on its own time. There's no point rushing. Baby is doing important brain and lung development right now. Just wait.
  • I had this done at 40weeks with my third. It did nothing for me personally.
  • my friend had it done and went into labor 48 hours later. But I have a number of friends that went into labor right away before they even left the doctors office.
  • If it makes you feel better, my mom had three children via unmedicated vaginal birth and she said the time they stripped her membranes was the worst pain ever.

  • It will only start things off if your body is pretty much ready to go anyway. I had 2 or 3 of these with DS (can't remember exactly) and they didn't work for me. As a PP said, if it does work it would be within 24-48 hours.
  • I had mine done at 35 weeks and 5 days. That was a Wednesday. My daughter was born at 6 am on Friday. It worked really well for me.

Hopefully there was a reason they stripped your membranes that early?

Was there a medically necessary reason for your OB to strip membranes before you were full term? I've had two pregnancies with two different OBs and neither would consider this before 39 weeks.

OP if you had them stripped on Friday, and you're not in labor, then it sounds like it didn't work.  I had mine done at 40 weeks with DS2, contractions/cramping started within the hour. I went into labor with consistent contractions the next evening, and he was born the morning after that at 10:21.  I had them stripped with DS1 also, but it didn't work and he was born at 40w4d.  You can also try walking to get things going, at the very least you'll get a bit of exercise.

35.5 weeks and membranes stripped ... Hopefully it was medically necessary, if not your dr should not be doing it before 39-41 weeks !
  • I just had mine done too at 39+1 with being 3-4cm dilated. I felt like I was in full on labor immediately after. I didn't even know if I could drive myself home! Contractions and tears for about 12 hrs. Things died down a bit to contractions every 5 mins. After 24 hours, things died down even more, until I went for a walk. After that, things were in full swing again. I'm up at 2am, with severe back ache and contractions. If nothing has happened for you, I'm thinking nothing will. This is my second baby
  • Didn't work for me. Had it done at 39 weeks and 40 weeks had to get induced at 41 very annoying
