The simple difference between a basal thermometer
and a regular thermometer is the level of sensitivity of temperature
that they detect. A basal thermometer measures body temperature by the
10th’s of a degree. A woman’s basal body temperature may only rise or
lower just a few 10th’s of a degree when it goes into ovulation and by
using a basal thermometer you can get a far more accurate baseline
temperature that allows you to know quickly and precisely if now is the
time to actively try for a baby once ovulation begins.
A regular thermometer
measures the temperature of your body by whole degrees, leaving the
chance of a more accurate basal body temperature out of the realm of
possibility. So while great for ferreting out fevers, it does not
accurately notate minute changes in temperature to a tenth of a degree.

Don't get the CVS one! I used it for months and it took about 4 minutes to beep. I switched to the Mabis (based on everyone's recommendation here) and it's great!

@11chicago11 I took like half a month off of temping this past month and then started again. There's a comfort in seeing your patterns, IMO. Good luck!
I second or third the Target brand one and booo on the CVS brand one. I also temp orally but some people temp vaginally - just thought I'd throw that out there.

It's possible to have fluctuations with oral temps; for instance if you slept with your mouth open. I temp orally personally, but I may try vaginal this next cycle. Good luck!
Ok so order a basal temp masbis. on cd4.... waiting for it to arrive. if not here thinking of just BM every other day from cd10 - 16. have opk but used that for past three months. maybe both.
Yeah, we are going to BD every other day during the expected ovulation time. I'll start temping on CD 1 if no BFP. I didn't have he thermometer in hand to start at the beginning of this cycle.
I had issues w the cvs one too & just gave up. Its only my first cycle. Id like to try a different thermometer but I dont even find the mabis one at my target! Any other good ones out there?
