September 2015 Moms

Had to have my wedding ring cut off today.

I pushed my luck..I try to wear it occasionally these days on my day off and it went on easily this morning. Then all of a sudden my finger swelled and it was stuck. I tried Windex, ice water, dawn and lube but it was not budging. Hubby drove me to the jewelry store and had it cut off. Going to fix it but they told me it would be best to wait till after the baby to size it right. :(

  • I almost had to have my ring cut off during my first pregnancy. Aw the joys! I'm glad they can fix it though. Did you start to feel clostraphobic when you realized that you couldnt get it off?
  • I never ever swelled up before but during this pregnsncy this has been happening. I got stuck once in my ring where nothing I did could get it off. But I just left it over night on me and next morning it came off.
Sorry you had to cut yours off. :(

I had to stop wearing mine months ago because the band is about a centimeter thick all the way around and unfortunately it's too chunky to wear on a chain around my neck. You could do that with yours until the baby comes and the swelling goes down (once you get it fixed).

  • There is a trick the emergency personnel use. You take a shoe string and tie it around the finger and I think the ring. Somehow the ring comes off just fine.
  • Thread a piece of floss under the ring and on the other side wrap it numerous times around your finger tightly. Once it's wrapped, pull the free end of the floss that you threaded under the ring and it'll slide right off.
  • I almost had to do this in my second pregnancy! So scared that for this one I just quit wearing it lol I was surprised how long it took my fingers to de-swell after my son was born. It was like a solid 4 weeks before I could get it back on afterwards.
  • So sorry. This almost happened to me yesterday but after trying for an hour SO and I were able to take it off.
  • Well what would happen if you left the ring on? I know my FIL can't take of his ring for about 20 years now and still has full use of his finger... As long as it's not turning blue I don't think there is a danger in waiting till next morning where your body is... normal.
  • @v1wwo in surgery (should you need a c section) you cannot wear any jewelry.

  • You ladies who had to cut the ring should have researched! I found a great article plus several YouTube videos on how to remove a ring and the string thing worked perfectly.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have also been pushing my luck. I've worn my wedding ring for a special occasion till this weekend...I had the worse swelling episode due to heat and I couldn't remove my rings. I've waited till the next day and luckily I was able to remove them. Now, I'm wearing my wedding ring in my necklace. Don't worry, I used to work in a jewelry place before this things happen and when you get your ring fixed it will look brand new and you wouldn't even notice that it had been cut before.
  • I am so sorry! I had to have my ring cut off last month and I was so sad. :-( I had shooting nerve pain in my finger for about 3 days after my ring was cut off. Now I am totally fine and my ring fits again but I am not going to put it back on until after my LO is born. The jeweler suggested waiting a couple months after the baby was born in case it needs to be resized bigger or smaller. I caught my DH looking at the jewelry counter while we were at Costco (ok, so it's not Tiffany's but still!) this weekend - so maybe I am getting a present! Haha!

We tried the string thing and I do no recommend it. Getting the ring cut off at a jewelry store cost me $5. The duct tape method and the dental floss method only work if you can get someone to tighten it enough to get the end under the ring. This is pretty painful because the finger above where the ring is stuck is already swollen and tender. The dental floss was super sharp and actually cut my finger, my DH was not willing to pull it any tighter after that. After watching several You Tube videos, we tried: ice, lotion, soap, duct tape, and dental floss. I recommend going to a jewelry store and getting it professionally cut off. I was not wanting to get my finger scared in order to save $5.
  • Aw no that sucks! I'm sorry :(

  • That stinks! Sorry you had to have it cut off. Mine was getting so tight and I was afraid that would happen to me so I went and bought a cheap one from Wal-Mart to wear until my fingers return to normal.

My fingers swelled about 24 hours before my last labor. I tried everything to get my engagement ring and wedding ring off with no success. They weren't tight enough to do damage to my finger, just tight enough to not be able to get them off. My OB and midwife had no problem with me leaving them on, even if I had needed a c section I could have left them on. I finally was able to pull them off about 4 weeks after delivery.

If your rings are at all tight, take them off now. Mine still fit when I put them on that morning and my swelling was pretty sudden right before labor. No pre-e or anything, apparently this is just something my body does.

  • Nooooo!!! I'm so sorry. I stopped wearing mine cause.i was scared of this about a month and half ago. I miss my beautiful ring. These sausage fingers are so obnoxious! Summer heat doesn't help. But I get so mad, I live in Denver and I swear I'm surrounded by these waif thin pregnant women who all still have regular sized hands and ankles/feet!!!!
  • I had to have mine cut off the other day as well! I tried everything...from soap, lotion, even Windex. I tried the string trick at home with no luck. ER doc tried the string technique and said there's no way my rings were coming off. He said to choose my finger or my rings. I chose my finger. (It was purple and lost feeling at this point). Good news is they can be easier fixed. Lesson learned!!
  • I was so terrified of mine getting stuck that I stopped wearing it as soon as I had a little bit of trouble taking it off. That was at about 20 weeks or so. I just wear it on my necklace now. I definitely miss wearing it (since my husband and I have only been married for 9 months now, and I was pregnant after two months). Hoping it won't be too long before it fits on my finger again! :D
