Pulling off

My LO is 3 months and has always been a champion BFer until now. Right around the three month mark, he's started a habit of nursing for a couple of seconds, and then pulling off. When he pulls off, it's often with so much suction and so much movement that he's been breaking blood vessels and giving me hickeys all over the place. He doesn't seem to be looking at anything in particular- he just seems a bit frantic and irritable. He doesn't change the pattern during letdown, so it doesn't seem to be frustration with the flow. What gives?

It may just be a phase. My LO hit this stage where he would push his feet off the arm of the chair and pop off my nipple while maintaining full suction. You might be able to break the seal with your finger in his mouth before he pops off to save yourself some pain. Hopefully he'll outgrow that soon.
