1st Trimester

Flying during 1st trimester

Anyone fly during their 1st trimester ?
What are some of the things your doctor said about doing so...Did they try to talk you out of it or were they all for it?
Thank you in advance

Re: Flying during 1st trimester

  • I asked my OB this on our first visit since we are planning upcoming trips. She said from then (6 weeks along) all the way up to 8 months was not a problem. I'm sure this is assuming you have an uncomplicated low-risk pregnancy.

  • No reason not to fly until you get to 38 weeks. It's fine.

I told my doc I was flying transatlantic and she said nothing. My advice would be to have some snacks on hand, stay hydrated (even though getting up to pee all the time is a nuisance-maybe see if you can get an aisle seat) and try walk around the cabin a bit when you can in order to keep your circulation flowing well.

ETA I'm flying transatlantic on Friday and I will be 10+3

  • Literally on the last leg of a transatlantic trip right now. Midwife told me to make sure I got up and walked around a lot and to stay hydrated!

Yes. I have had a miscarriage. Miscarriages aren't caused by flying.

  • I know that but you didn't have any concern flying in the 1st trimester after having a miscarriage ?

No, actually. My miscarriage was caused by a chromosomal abnormality. I'm in my fourth pregnancy now. I think I flew probably a dozen times while pregnant and had no problems. Flight attendants fly while pregnant all the time.

  • OP - if you use the search function you will find hundreds of posts on this, there is at least one every week on this board and loads on each BMB. You'll find a lot of good information and other people's experiences to read through.
  • I flew at 8 weeks and my doctor said nothing.
  • I had a molar pregnancy in Dec of 2010, followed by a miscarriage in October of 2011 and then had a healthy little boy in November of 2012 and am pregnant again now (11 weeks tomorrow). I've had two ultrasounds and baby looks great. Miscarriage is definitely something that worries me and something that you never truly get over, but if you do have one, I encourage you to talk to others who have and don't feel ashamed or feel like it's your fault. Good luck mama!

I was a flight attendant, flying long haul flights several times a week until I was 34 weeks pregnant. It's fine.
