Ramen Noodles - good or bad?

I searched "ramen noodles" and didn't find a discussion on here, so I'm sorry if one exists! I have the hugest craving for ramen noodles (called mr noodles here), but I've heard a lot of conflicting info. I'm not planning on eating them every day.. But there isn't a whole lot that I can stomach these days, so I was wondering if it was okay every once in a while? Thoughts ladies?

Re: Ramen Noodles - good or bad?

  • I practically lived on ramen during weeks 8-9 because I couldn't stomach anything else. Obviously not the healthiest diet, but it's better than not eating at all.
  • In moderation I can't imagine why not. My SIL couldn't eat anything but ramen during her last pregnancy because she was so sick all the time. It was better for her to eat something rather then nothing at all.

I've been eating it for lunch almost every day. They've been tasting so good! I'm not sure why they wouldn't be ok- because they're high in sodium? They aren't the healthiest by any means, but better than nothing!

  • Yep, I've been eating them quite a bit at work - I just work thru lunch so I can leave earlier every day and this is one of the cheapest/quickest meals to prepare away from home. Of course they aren't the healthiest but I try to eat healthier snacks and prepare good meals at home for dinner to make up for it.

  • As pp have said, not the healthiest (lots of sodium!), but man, does it taste good! I try to keep a few cup o'noodles at my desk in case I need a quick lunch and didn't pack anything. At least it's something, right?

  • I also like the small cup of noodles - gets the fix in and hopefully less sodium! I think the main concern would be if you're buying noodles that had MSG which I'm not sure exist!
  • I think the sodium is what people worry about with ramen noodles and lots of other soups. Is there a low salt option? Or don't use the little packet thingy and add other things (veggies, spices?) to jazz up the plain noodles?

  • Yes, Ramen has a lot of sodium and MSG, and of course Ramen is just not the nutritional powerhouse that say a big bowl of salad is, but it's also cheap and often very satisfying.  Just balance it out with other more nutritionally dense foods when you can and don't worry too much.

  • Thank you so much ladies!!! You all are the best :) I will enjoy my noodles as part of a healthy diet ;)
  • oh you mean for pregnancy, I was ready to come here and say yes it is tasty goodness!
In general, it isn't the healthiest thing to eat due to its sodium content. and I think some varieties have nitrate in them. But, like pp said, i think it's fine in moderation! I've also been enjoying them here and there during this pregnancy, and I did with my last also.

  • Ramen noodles aren't terrible and if you want to make them healthier without changing the flavor mix an egg into the boiling water (the same way you would make egg drop soup)!

I do this to at least add a little protein and I put in scallions sometimes. Yum. But def craving ramen here too!

That sounds so good - usually I just add mixed veggies but will definitely being trying it your way!

MSG is a big no in my book (pregnancy or not), but from a baby safety standpoint, you're fine.

ETA: I eat ramen noodles, but an MSG and random-crap-free brand. I've been on a noodle kick, too.

  • Its sooo good!  I lived on ramen (creamy chicken flavor) during weeks 10-11 because nothing else sounded good.  Not the best choice as others have said but so yummy when I was sick!

The creamy chicken flavor is my favorite, but I can't seem to find it anymore. :(

They never have more then two or three packs of it at a time at Publix but that's usually where I find it.  That flavor's my fave too :)

They carry this brand at my Fred Meyer (Kroger affiliate) in the natural foods section. No chicken flavor, though, which was my favorite top ramen flavor back in the day:

I also love these, but a lot lengthier ingredient list, so I rarely indulge: https://www.amazon.com/Thai-Kitchen-Bangkok-Instant-1-6-Ounce/dp/B0072DGGF
