For those that formula feed

How many days after your milk came in did your boobs stop hurting? Mine came in Friday and although I am not in as much pain as I was, they are still huge and hurt. I am tired of wearing 2 of the tightest sports bras I own but that's all that is helping at this point. I thought it was only 2 or 3 days with my first but I don't remember. Just wondering how much longer is average?

Re: For those that formula feed

  • I can't remember exactly but I think with my first it was like 4 or 5 days.

  • For me it was two days. My milk didn't come in as strong as when I had dd.
  • Did you formula feed right from the get go? I BFed for 10 days then switched to formula. I couldn't go cold turkey... I ended up pumping as infrequently as I could to take you edge off. It's been 5 days and I think I'll probably only have to pump once more, if that. If you formula fed from the beginning though I'm not sure what the protocol is. Good luck mama.

With DS, I was EP'ing for a few weeks before I totally weaned. So, my experience may be a bit different from yours. It took me about a good solid 4 days for my milk to dry up (Obviously not 100% but enough to feel relief from engorgement). I also used cabbage which helped tremendously! GL.

  • I am right there with you! I've been in mega pain with rock hard boobs for 3 days now. They have started to soften and not hurt as bad, but whenever I give her a bottle they ache and burn still. I did BF and hand express for two days for colostrum so I feel like that made it worse. Last time I BFed for 6 weeks and slowly weaned and they only hurt for one day so this is not what I had expected. Hopefully we get some relief soon.
  • I am a bf'er but taking a warm shower and trying to hand express just a little can give you a bit of relief and the hand expression does not cause more milk to come in like a pump would.  LIke @californiadream87 said, I have also heard that cabbage can give relief.   Good luck.  Engorgement hurts like a bitch!

  • Cabbage leaves^ like @jessandandy09 mentioned. I've always bf but my MIL swears by it; supposedly it draws the milk out?
  • I formula feed , take Tylenol extra strength! Omg that was heaven for me when I was engorged !! It literally like numbed my boobs ! I was engorged for I think a week or longer ? But with the Tylenol I didn't even care .
  • Thanks moms. I did start formula feeding from the start.  And I was taking Tylenol from the start but have decreased it. Maybe I will start taking it regularly again to see if that helps.
  • Ice packs help too!
  • With my DS my grandma kept telling me to use campho phenique. I thought she was crazy but eventually gave in. The oil not the gel. It worked great! It smells awful and will leave oil on your bra but it definitely worked for me.
  • For those of you who use formula- how did you decide to not breastfeed? Since my LO had a fever after birth, he wasn't nursing well and my milk seemed to stop coming in. I guess I have the opposite problem of the rest of you! I've tried pumping and feeding him now that he's better but nothing is working and I'm thinking I will just have to use formula (not that there's anything wrong with that, I had just planned to bf). Anyone have advice? How did you choose formula vs breast milk?

  • This time I chose to FF because my toddler is 17 months and my new baby wouldn't latch. To me, it wasn't worth stressing over and taking a toll on the whole family when I know formula is just as good an option for us. @malonc2
  • @malonc2 with DS, we had latching issues. Looking back now, I should've kept trying because my supply wasn't an issue but it was all just too much at the time. I did what made us both happy in the moment. While I do plan to BF this go round, I don't regret my decision with DS. As long as you feed your baby :)

  • Frozen peas in between the bras!
  • Thanks ladies! Because my supply is basically non existent and it's so sad watching him unsatisfied, we have made the decision to formula feed. I just want him to be full and healthy :)
