Cankles...

So, I have gotten through almost 35 weeks of pregnancy without too much swelling and then Saturday- BAM! Out of nowhere I have huge cankles. WHERE DID THIS SWELLING COME FROM?!?!?

Drinking tons of water and trying to keep my feet up, but I guess this is just part of being very pregnant in the heat of Summer?

Yay us!

Re: Cankles...

  • Had no swelling at all until 33 weeks now I have permanent cankles and my toes look like short fat sausages
    Only 5 weeks left :)

  • I bought compression socks and they changed my life! I work still with lots of standing walking and im 38 weeks. When I got home about 4 weeks ago my ankle was the size of a soft ball! My feet later that night looked like fat sausages and my upper foot was puffy and jiggled when I walk.
  • I have the same issue.  More so on my left foot/ankle than the right.  My question is how are we supposed to be exercising and "walking the baby out" with huge feet.  They tell us to prop them up and rest but to get regular exercise.  Not sure how to do both.  Especially since my feet will no longer fit in anything but a flip flop.
  • I think baby just gets big enough to compress stuff by a certain point. There may be exercises to encourage baby to move into a more optimal position but I'm just guessing.

  • I also had no swelling all pregnancy.. then hit about 35/36 weeks and BAM. I asked the doc to make sure it was not the onset of preeclampsia and she just said I was fine and its the normal "Pregnancy swell" towards the end and especially in the summer... so long as your blood pressure is in check ... we just need to deal with it and drink fluids. Also she told me to watch to be sure that they subside a good amount when I have them up above my heart...
  • I've had huge swollen feet and cankles since about 30/32 weeks ... 36 weeks now. That will be the one thing I'm most grateful for after giving birth and healing - no more swollen, achy feet!
  • only fit into SOME of my flip flops and I feel like the elephant man! Almost too self conscious to go get a pedicure next week.. I'm hoping it's this stupid weather and it will go away!!
  • Omg, dying today. Just shy of 38 weeks and swelling has been minimal... Until today. My feet are now super swollen and I too have cankles. My fault for taking my boys to an amusement park in 95 degree heat. Will probably not last all day at this rate!

  • I was taking a shower this morning, and I happened to look down at my feet. I started sobbing/laughing because my feet are huge, with short fat sausage toes. The shoes that fit yesterday now are super snug.
  • I didn't have any swelling until this past weekend at 36 1/2 weeks.... Now I have cankles and my wedding rings are pretty tight.

  • Where does one find compression socks?! I need them, stat!
  • I've had cankles and horrible swollen feet since about 16 weeks now and I never thought I'd say this but I'm glad its summer time cause I can only wear 2 pairs of flip flops none of my shoes fit. I joked with my husband that someone should open a swollen feet store with shoes that are wider. I think they would make a killing!
  • Just today my cankles kicked in! I'm 37 weeks and 2 days..... And so thankful this didn't happen until now. In my first pregnancy they were swollen from about 24 weeks onward! I work on my feet all day and it was horrible! None of my shoes fit and everything throbbed by the end of the day. Compression socks do work wonders. I will have to pull mine out of retirement for the last week or so of work! Gah... I was really hoping on avoiding it entirely this time around;) oh well, c'est la vie!
  • I had zero swelling until Sunday night- 35 weeks. I don't recognize my own legs and feet. The left leg/foot swells more than the right.

Bad news - it's winter here and I'm swelling too. My legs are so big and hard and gross.
  • I'm having the same issue all of the sudden at week 35.5.
  • Ditto here, swelling kicked in out of no where a week ago at 33 weeks :-( right about the same time as my last pregnancy which was also a summer one. Only this time it seems to be worse because I can't even fit into a pair of birkenstocks, only flip flops. And my hands are swollen too :-( Monitoring blood pressure regularly and had a urine exam yesterday to check protein count and all good so no risk of pre-e which is what I was worried about. Here's to flip flops and lots of swimming!
  • I posted a couple weeks ago about having to get my wedding ring cut off - so please take them off if they are tight! (Cut off at a jewelry store, so easy and cheap but very emotional!)

I have been wearing compression socks for a couple months and they really do help. Also sleeping in my left side helps too. I end up having to get up every 2 hours to pee but it gives my body a chance to clear out what it needs to, and I wake up every day with normal sized feet. I am embarrassed by my sausage thick toes but my DH has helped me keep them presentable. My sister offered to take me to a foot massage but if someone pressed on them while swollen, I think I would start crying.
  • I'm due in 3 weeks and 1 day!!! I have had no ankle/leg swelling YET, but the meat of my hands and toes feel swollen when I bend them.

I only have 2 shoes that fit me. My "office slippers" and flip flops that I use anywhere else.
The compression socks have changed my life! :-) I got them in the pharmacy area in Walmart. I am a bank teller so I'm on my feet all day. I now wet the socks slightly and put them I the freezer for when I get home. The cold and the compression feel so good when I get my feet up at the end of the day.
  • This thread makes me feel so much better, just to know I'm not the only one!!! I'm 35 weeks in the TX August heat and just went back to work as a teacher a couple days ago. I haven't even been on my feet THAT much but I have cankles and sausage fingers like nobody's business! I bought TOMS this weekend to have comfy work shoes and when I went to put them on today, I couldn't get them on! I'm usually a size 9.5, but I need like an 11! I'm just trying to put them up regularly and drink lots of water. And wash them with cold water when I get home from work. It's nice to know you guys totally understand bc it feels like no one I know gets it!
  • Some advice my doctor gave me yesterday after I called him to advise about foot swelling but good levels of BP and 0 protein count in urine exam "Make sure to drink lots of natural mineral water, reduce salt in food i.e. avoid heavily seasoned recipes and try to rest feet up after lunch for a few hours". The last piece of advice I realize is not an option if you're still working but thought I'd share all of his recommendations in case anyone found them useful.
