The Twin Effect??

I've just heard about the twin effect where people who get pregnant soon (1-3 months) after stopping birth control have a high chance of twins.

I took bc for the last time in June then got pregnant in July, so I definitely fit that one qualifier.

Has anyone on here experienced the twin effect?? I'm kind of freaking out and won't know anything via sonogram until late September! We already have a 1yo, and I know hubs will lose his SHIT if we're having twins!

Re: The Twin Effect??

  • I've never heard of this and the only thing Google gives me on the subject is a blog entry. As a rule I believe zero things I read in blogs until I see the information in a different location.

Where did you read it? Can you post a link?

  • There is an increased risk but it's still so small that I don't think it's much to worry about.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • Never heard of this.

But my brother was 18 months old when my twin sister and I were born :) Our parents survived!
  • Interesting. My first question would be: Is there a difference in the birth control formula used in the 70s (when the study was published) and now? Or is that even a factor?

I also just took a highly scientific quiz telling me my chances of having twins haha

  • I've heard of this before. It has something to do with your body might release 2 eggs while trying to regulate after birth control. We conceived DS1 3 months after coming off the pill and he's a singleton.
  • I think there is some truth to this. I know two couples who stopped BC and got pregnant with twins the following month!

  • Oh boy! When I find out in September (also, why is my appointment so far away?!), I'll be sure to let y'all know!

    Thanks, ladies!

The answer to your question is : nowadays we use lower hormone doses than back then.

  • I got a BFP 3 weeks after stopping BC when I was pregnant with DD, so it wasn't true for us.

Same. And 3 weeks without protection this time. Apparently were going to have to be crazy careful when we decide we're done ;)

Ditto. I was off BC since Christmas this time, but we used condoms every time until some add on insurance kicked in July 1st, BFP 3.5 weeks after the goalie was pulled...

  • Well I got off birth control in May and was pregnant with twins in July. So it could be true! No history of twins either side and I already have a 3 year old boy and a 8 year old boy...
  • If it helps I was on implanon
