Baby spit up while laying down

so I'm kind of freaking out. My baby spit up while sleeping on her back. I was totally unaware and watching TV. It's the second time I saw her spit up like that and it looked like a full meal!!! Not just a tad bit of spit up! Is that normal?? I feel like a horrible mother that I feel like my baby could have choked and I would just be watching TV.

I burp her after she eats but usually she is kind of dozed off by then, so she sometimes doesn't burp.

I only breastfeed also.

I feel like crying:(

Re: Baby spit up while laying down

  • It is ok. Babies spit up. Maybe just try to burp your LO longer next time and take a break mid feed to burp

  • If it continues after doing the pp suggestions, she may just need to be more upright for 15-20 mins after if possible, especially if she is awake and squirming around. If asleep and still it should be rare.
  • Mine also spits up when lying down. I asked the NP at her Dr's office abs she said it's probably reflux. I try to keep her upright for at least 20 minutes after feeding and burping. I'll be honest, she still spits up when she lies down sometimes. But it's not nearly as much and not everytime.
  • Babies spit up, and sometimes it looks like a lot, but I promise you it wasn't the entire meal. My LO started spitting up week 2-3 and it scared the crap out of me. She has a mild reflux (but most babies do!). The pediatrician said about that time is when babies start to spit up more often bc their meals are larger and their little openings to their tummies don't know how to shut it off correctly yet, so up it comes. As long as your baby is peeing, pooping and gaining weight no worries! As for choking, it's very rare for babies to choke on spit up..it may sound like they are but they'll be fine! My baby spit up one time while sleeping (and I was too obviously). When I went to get her when she woke up there was a huge mess in her bassinet..don't feel bad! Good luck!
  • Don't cry! Your not a horrible mom, you are human! Remember that. Babies spit up and your LO is perfectly fine. Don't get caught up in the what ifs that could have happened. They didn't, you now can learn from this and move forward. You won't even remember this in 2 weeks time anyways. You doing just fine.
