Increased fetal movement at 40 weeks

So today I'm 40 weeks exactly and I've noticed that the baby has really increased her movement... not so much kicking, but doing a LOT of stretching and moving my stomach around - I was worried at one point that she was trying to flip to breech.  I don't feel like it's anything to worry about, but it's just strange because normally she's pretty quiet and over the past 3 weeks or so her movements were very subtle to the point that I would have to do kick counts at least once every day or so to make sure she's still okay.

Did anyone else notice this?  I did some searches online and there's no definite yes or no on whether it's a sign of labor.  It's just strange that the movements have decreased so much but then today she feels like she's trying to jump her way out through my rib cage.

  • Babies do this. I wouldn't be concerned. Some days she's really busy other days she's fairly calm. I also don't think it's a sign of labor but who knows?

  • same over here. so much movement- all painful!
  • I'm a wee bit jealous. My LO had a super mellow day (39+5) so I actually went in for NST because all the cold water and sugar wasn't perking her up. Thankfully she was fine, just being sluggish. Her movements are getting more subtle to feel so I'm hoping maybe she'll start being more active until the end so I don't have to feel crazy paranoid #:-S

That's exactly how I was feeling as well from week 38 all the way up until yesterday... Yesterday I only felt her move right before bed and was thinking of going into L&D to have her checked out but decided against it since I felt slight movement after drinking a ton of cold juice.  Today she's been on a tear though.
  • My LO was moving up until I was being induced. Also not shire if it's a sign of labor, but I'm not sure I'd worry about him flipping breach. Baby is pretty tight in there now.

  • This happened to me at 37 weeks. It seemed like he was moving the entire day one day and I was very concerned because it was so unusual for him so I called my doctor. The nurse said not to worry about increased movement and that they really only worry about decreased movement.
  • My DS was super active even in delivery! I was 39w3d and he kicked until he was in the birth canal. Increased movement happens. But if it's jerky movement, you may want to mention it to your doctor. Distress can begin to happen late in pregnancy.

Went into L&D today because she has been sluggish the last 2 days. She is great, I am just super paranoid now.

Mine has done the same, and at this point it's painful at times (40.4). Whenever he gets really active I just remind him if he's THAT uncomfortable he's always welcome to get out.

it's as if you were describing my son! he's also welcome to get out...lol weel-put! 39.0
