My LO is 1 week and 3 days old and his cord stub finally fell off .
I was planning on giving him a sponge bath tonight till I discovered that it came off!

But , I'm not sure if a actual bath is on our agenda tonight.
I'm not sure if I can bathe him if theirs still a scab left behind?

Can I take him a bath with the scab there or do I have to wait for that to heal ?
Not sure if the way it looks matters but I attached a photo just incase.

  • If I remember correctly with DD1 hers was like this. I wouldn't do a bath yet. You can get a Q-tip tonight and dip it in some rubbing alcohol and gently swab what's in there still to help it dry out.

  • Yeah that's what I was doing the hospital gave me alcohol wipes And I would clean it with just about every diaper change but I happen to run out of my last one I think last night :/ I might have some rubbing alcohol somewhere .
  • I would give my kid a bath but I'm pretty chill when it comes to stuff like that. I'd just make sure to pat it dry after.

This. We gave DS a bath right after it fell off. No problems.

  • My baby's looked like that too (hers fell off at 6 days old but left a scab behind) and her pedi made me wait until the rest came out before I gave her a bath. It actually took about 2 weeks for the rest to come off.
  • I just asked my sister this today. She said she waited until it completely dried out. I wish I remembered to ask the pedi when I saw her earlier. #-o
  • Wait until it isn't goopy and has dried then you ought to be fine to give a bath. I kinda like the sponge baths though, holding her in a towel in my lap is easier than bending over a tub.
  • Once it's off its bath time. Just make sure it dries before covering it with diapers or clothes
  • We did a sponge bath around it until it completely healed. Took about 2 weeks. For the remainder of the cord, I used rubbing alcohol for about a week.

It isn't goopy at all it's a complete scab . But just to be safe I'm going to keep using alcohol to continue to dry it out till its gone completely and to help keep it clean . I think I'm just going to try to bathe him tonight but just not submerge his belly button with water. *well try my hardest*
