Gaining too much weight...?

I'm only 12 weeks and have already gained 10 pounds, I feel like it's because to keep the nausea away I have to eat constantly! I'm overweight to begin with, so I'm nervous about the weight gain. Anyone else gaining weight?

Note: I'm convinced at least half of the weight has gone straight to my chest though, which my husband doesn't mind.

  • I hear ya. I'm scared I'm gaining too much too fast. I started out heavier than I would've liked, too. Lol I'm convinced half of my gain is in my chest too. It's nuts! My midwife said we're in survival mode when we're in the first trimester and that it'll all be ok and balance out. Hang in there!

  • Realistically 10 lbs at 12 weeks technically probably is more than what you "should" gain, but if that's what helps you keep the nausea at bay, I say go for it. I'd love to be able to eat regularly throughout the day. I'm lucky if I can choke down 2 "full meals" in a 24 hour period.
  • Yes, I was the same way. I was sick on an empty stomach and carbs were all that helped. Plus the fatigue basically killed my exercise routine. I gained 7 lbs in the first tri. Doc said not to worry yet and my goal is to keep it under 35 total.
  • 35! My doc told me to stay under 15. I'm not even that much over weight. I've been so sick that I've actually lost weight in the first tri. I swear I'm all boobs and bloat right now.
  • @Sillysnick2k16 not to be rude but your doctor sounds a little stringent! I started out about 5 pounds overweight and my midwife said to gain between 15-25.

Yeah I guess starting at normal weight they suggest gaining 25-35 lbs. Since 35 is the high end she told me to keep it under.
  • I'm about 50 pounds overweight and my doctor wants me to gain around 24 pounds. 15 seems so little!

  • I'm average I guess for my size and my doc said only 15-20lbs..

  • I'm a few pounds overweight, although nearly in the normal healthy BMI range, and my doc said to gain around 30 lbs.  Every doctor will tell you something a little different, as will different internet sites.  We can't tell you definitively what a healthy number is, and it varies from woman to woman anyway, but if you feel like you've gained too much weight in the first trimester, make up for it in your second when you feel better by getting lots of exercise and making smarter choices about what you eat.  Don't stress over it too much now when you still feel like crap.  I feel blah today and fully intend to eat pie for lunch because it sounds awesome.

    This! :)

Ooh there's pie? Now I want pie. :-P

Weight is such a touchy subject. I try to eat healthy but I'm not working out. I'm not trying to lose any weight. As long as the babies are growing w hb, then I'm OK.
  • I am of "average" weight and was told to gain about 25-35lbs with baby #1. I gained 50+ by the time DD was born. Those last few appts, I just gave the dr a death glare of "if you say anything about my weight, I might hurt you". I lost the first 35lbs relatively quickly after giving birth, and then I worked hard for the next 12 months to work off the rest of the weight, but I did it. Of course, as soon as I stopped BFing DD, I gained 15lbs (eek), and a month later I was pregnant again! So, I started this pregnancy 15lbs heavier than last pregnancy. I'm hoping to not gain as much this time, but I'm not stressing about it either. I spent pregnancy #1 constantly worried about my weight gain. If you are eating healthy and staying active, then don't stress too much about gaining a little more than you had planned. We all gain weight at different rates and different times during our pregnancies. Enjoy the pregnancy!!
  • 13weeks Monday and I'm up 6lbs. I know for a fact its all the carbs and lack of working out the last 10 weeks. Even though you know this is supposed to happen, it is a bit disheartening.
  • I've put on 7 pounds. Will be 16 weeks come Monday. My doctor says 22 pounds - 25 pounds for my build. We'll see if I manage not going over.
  • I'm up around 10 lbs at 15+2. Started out at an average weight but the first few weeks of my pregnancy we were on vacation and I ate everything! Since we got back almost 5 weeks ago, I've gained about 3 of that 10 lbs.

  • I'm up 7 pounds at 15 weeks tomorrow. I would like to gain just 25 but I know me and it'll likely end up closer to 35 to 40lbs. God bless my metabolism too because frankly I eat bread and more bread everyday so 7 is probably half of what it actually should be based off the way I'm eating.

  • I'm having exactly the same problem...I found out that eating helps the nausea in most cases and i know I've gained a little more than I should have...I dont weigh myself because of previous eating disorders and a fear of scales but I've peaked at one weigh in and was horrified...I've definitely gained over 5kg and on 12th week now. I'm just hoping the nausea goes away!
  • Almost 14 weeks and up 6. I feel huge however (boobs, thighs, butt). It's that awkward stage of just looking fat before the bump is pronounced. Aside from walking and occasional swimming, I am not working out. I come home from work and I am asleep by 8pm. Is anyone else still exhausted at 14 weeks? I want my energy back :)

P.s sometimes bread is the only thing that brings stomach stability. It just is what it is
  • I am still pretty exhausted at 14 weeks. I can get through a day without a nap, but I get home from work and I'm completely useless. Waiting for that energy boost...
  • I was 10 lbs overweight with my last pregnancy and my doc said 25 lbs should be my goal. I gained 30 lbs and it was mostly in the beginning. That pregnancy was a boy. This time it's a girl and at almost 16 weeks, I've only gained a pound and a half (which makes me nervous that I'm not gaining enough)
  • Check out the pics of Kim Kardashian if you want to feel better about waight gain. Make me feel positively sylph like. Ha. (I do have sympathy for her. But me feeling smug isn't going to do her any harm).
  • She is due in December. I think she looks great!
  • I think I'm supposed to gain about 20-25 and I've already put on ten. I'm 17 weeks today and I was freaking out that I put on 10 in the first tri but I haven't gained any at all since I hit 2nd tri. I think I gained a ton of water weight and bloated up at first. Now that I'm feeling better I'm doing alright at eating healthy again so that's helping too.

The last photo I saw of her she looked absolutely amazing! While her feet swelled quite a bit during her pregnancy with Nori, her body almost always looked amazing. Not sure why you feeling smug that you're smaller than someone who's become wealthy and famous of her ample assets makes you feel better about yourself.

  • My OB is also very strict, I was also told not to gain more than 20lbs, I really don't know why if I'm in healthy BMI range. I've had a lot of trouble with nausea so at 16 weeks I'm up 5lbs. Now that my nausea is gone, I'm about to start gaining more. It makes me nervous because I know she's going to scold me, she is ridiculous about diet. I'm waiting for the weather to cool down so I can start walking outdoors, hopefully that will keep my weight at bay.

  • My ob said 11-20. I am overweight. So far thanks to the nausea and food aversions, I lost some and then only gained back 1. So at 14.4, I'm +1. I would really like to stay at 11-15 and I'm sure if I'm careful, I can do so.
  • I think she looks fantastic, and regardless of your opinions of them as people, no pregnant woman should ever be shamed for her body. She should, however, be shamed for this choice of footwear. I know your feet are swollen, so for the love of God, ditch the sky high heels!

That's the picture I had in my head when I talked about her swollen feet! They're probably swollen that much because of the shoes. That cannot be comfortable.

Did you guys see the tv meterologist who lashed back at critics who fat shamed her for gaining 50lbs while carrying twins? I applaud that woman!

I thought wearing heels while pregnant was a "no no!" I can barely handle my sandals, who has the energy and balance for heels while pregnant? Lol

  • @brushesnbrunch I did see that! She looks great! I was so happy that she stood up for herself. I guess those people were offended that she didn't wear a muumuu or something?

@daisytortilla - it is a no-no but she's Kim K! I've been wearing flats for about 8 weeks because I felt less stable than usual in my heels.

  • Maybe wearing shoes like that is one of the things that makes her feel pretty? LOL I know we just had a thread about that.... I am more of a flips kinda girl so that makes me cringe.

I started working out a little more now that I'm feeling better, and actually put on 2 pounds since! I think it's mostly because I'm lifting weights though.

I was talking with my mom- and she said for her it was a lot of water weight. She apparently lost 30 pounds right away after having both my sister and me. Everyone's body is just different. For those who have gained a little more than you'd like, just keep that in mind. It's probably not fat, just water, your boobs, and other body fluids.

That's all I wear but they felt wobbly with my already wobbly ankles.

  • i'm up only 2 lbs at 17 weeks pregnant. i started off a little heavier - size 12 in pants - but i never carry weight in my stomach. my OB told me i should I only gain 20 lbs which I thought seemed low! i thought 25-35 was normal.

meanwhile, my husband is concerned bc im not really showing yet or gaining much... but everything is fine at every appt.

So true! When I was pregnant with DD, I gained 40lbs, I was pretty nervous about losing it all since DD only weighed in at 6lbs. But within the first week, I was constantly sweating like crazy (doing nothing lol) and I lost 20 lbs.

I am 17 weeks pregnant and have gained a total of 10 pounds with twins. My doctor said with my current weight and with twins I should only gain between 25-30 pounds. With my daughter I gained almost 80 lbs because of total bedrest and shots so I am extremely happy with only currently 10 pounds. My doctor told me not to stress about the weight that as long as I am within my calorie intake and the babies are healthy it's okay.
  • I'm 17 weeks and haven't suffered any nausea or food aversions and I'm up 5 lbs. the doctor said I'm right on track and that's perfect. I was told to expect to gain between 25-35 lbs in all. I can't imagine being 30 lbs heavier but I guess it's all in the stomach? Hopefully?
