April 2016 Moms

how to eat healthy when nothing sounds good?!

I have always been a gym-goer, trying to work out and stay healthy and eat good probably 75-80% of the time. Can't say I'm ever gonna give up pizza or toast on the weekends, but I have really trying to stick to eating healthy and clean. Lots of home cooked meals, smoothies with veggies, salads, quinoa, brown rice, chicken, that type of stuff. Now that I am about 6 weeks, I have no energy to workout, but I manage to fit in a nice 15-30 min walk everyday. I really wanted to eat much cleaner now that I'm pregnant and try to cut out the junk causing any unnecessary weight gain since I haven't been working out as much, but NOTHING sounds good.

Fruit and crackers with peanut butter, and salad with chicken and some sweet potato fries were some of my meals this week, but today it just hit that nothing sounded appetizing, and after wandering the grocery store, pop tarts were the only thing that I could stomach. I don't want to continue giving in to junk that sounds good, but how do I keep up with eating healthy when nothing sounds good? I figured I could try more fruit/veggie smoothies to get it down that way, but any advice so I'm not living on ritz and peanut butter? lol

  • My advice? Eat what you can keep down. The nausea will likely pass in the next month or two and you can start eating well again. If you can eat well, even better, but if healthy makes you gag, eat the pop tarts, especially if it allows you to keep your prenatal down.
For me, I have morning/early afternoon nausea, so it's toast/plain pasta and water for lunch and then I have to push the rest of my nutrition in the evenings. Not well rounded, but that's what the 2nd and 3rd trimester are for :)

  • Great advice from PP. Most likely your nausea won't last too long, and then you can get back to eating really healthy foods for the rest of your pregnancy. In the meantime, eat whatever you can keep down and don't feel guilty about it! Maybe smoothies would be easier to stomach as well?

  • All I could eat last pregnancy was kids gogurts in the first few weeks. I couldn't eat meat for months because it made me sick to look at it! My doctor told me to eat what I can keep down, the baby will take what they need from you! I feel for you!!
  • I just hit 6 weeks and pretty much nothing sounds good! I've been eating saltines in bed when I wake up (for nausea) and I can usually make myself eat some toast and a banana awhile later. Sometimes I can stomach a granola bar.
I've been craving strawberry toaster strudels!
  • thanks ladies! The problem is when I have tried to eat certain things im usually fine with it, but everything looks and sounds disgusting so I don't even attempt to make something I think I won't eat. Thankfully its more just a barely nauseous feeling, although last night after i fell alseep and got up to go to bed i really felt like I was gonna puke. I just look at my mess of a house and think of how normally i would be cleaning and working out and i have no motivation, i just lay around haha. But I know rest is important so I don't feel bad, I just hate to survive on crackers and toast blah!

  • For me it's not the food it's preparing it. I have zero energy. So when I occasionally have a burst of energy I'll make a bunch of healthy things so heating them up is easy. Leftover grilled chicken on a salad is great. Morning sickness is getting a bit rough though so I might be switching to something else. Oh and hire a housekeeper. It's the best thing I've ever done.

  • Yeah we have talked about a housekeeper, and up until this point I couldn't justify spending the money when it was just my husband and I. But I said once we have a kid, it wil be justifiable haha. I am thinking getting one sooner than later might be a good idea, thankfully my mom doesnt work and I might be able to convince her to come help clean for now

See chicken sounds so disgusting right now, nothing sounds good except toast. Its like when your sick and nothing sounds good except bland soup and toast or crackers. I do feel like I need to push myself a little more to not think about it and just try to eat what I know is good and I am sure it will taste good.

  • on a side note..... on days where pop-tarts and crackers are my main source of nutrition, I got some of the light ensure drinks, and i'll have one or two of those to make sure im getting some better nutients in me

  • Today I had this issue so I went to the salad bar of the grocery store near my work for lunch. Ended up with a tupper full of beets, grilled chicken, spinach, and Italian dressing, and it was EXACTLY what I needed. So my suggestion is the salad bar - lots of options and most of them are healthy!

  • Organic pop tarts? Don't be too hard on yourself. Most of the nutrition goes to support you since the body will give the baby whatever it needs so long as you've got it in you and you don't starve yourself. A few weeks of eating pop tarts won't kill you or the baby. Throwing up every bit of food that you eat is worse than eating no food at all. Take prenatals as often as you can stomach them, eat healthy when you can, and don't beat yourself up too much.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm still drinking an ensure or two if I don't have anything substantial and I am still taking prenatals (I got the gummy ones since they taste good)
