Too early to wean from nuk?

My LO is just about 6 months old. He used to sleep through the night until 6 weeks ago, now he wakes every 1 to 2 hours and fusses until we put his nuk back in. Is it too early to wean him from his nuk and let him fuss until he falls back to sleep? I feel so guilty doing so, but something has to work at some point!
