I m 8 week 5 days pregnant today morning I checked my fasting sugar that was 121 and day before yesterday my random level was 192. Need to know will this effect my baby
Elevated blood sugar levels (that are not controlled) in early pregnancy can cause possible defects, esp heart. Crucial fetal development happens very early so if levels are not controlled in those early stages, defects may occur. Don't freak out; I said possible not definite.
I would call your OB, MFM or endocrinologist (if you already see one) and ask about next steps. They will prob send you for an early glucose tolerance test but if your insulin function is already struggling/impaired, you might go straight to diet control or insulin. Keep testing fasting sugar and also your post meal sugar. 121 for fasting for one reading is not an know all, end all. You need a few days to compare but just make sure your doctor's take you seriously and monitor you.
Also be reminded that diabetes can cause other concerns during pregnancy. Just be aware of all concerns and call your doc with any issues.
Lastly, a fetal echocardiogram might be needed during the 2nd trimester just to make sure there are no heart defects to worry about right after birth. Fetal echo is easy peasy and does not take long. It is basically a special ultrasound with a pediatric cardiologist.
Wishing you a safe and healthy pregnancy. I am glad you are getting all things cleared up early on.
Are you a diabetic? The 121 is a good number. Depending on your doctor(s), if they are flexible they are okay with your numbers being in the normal range pre pregnacy. The 192 is high and worrisome, but on the bright side it isn't 300 or above. What was the time frame that you took it? Was it at least an 1-2 hours after eating? Definitely bring it up to your doctor. Usually in the first trimester, I thought you experience more lows. The best advice? Follow all your doctor's instructions, keep records of your sugars and send them in weekly. If you do all that, then you will more than likely deliver a healthy baby (quote from my own doctor).
