Stupid Question - How do you count how old your baby is?

I feel incredibly dumb for asking this, but I always assumed you went by weeks (8 weeks 2 months, 12 weeks 3 months, etc.) vs actual months (May 15th, June 15th, July 15th, etc.). But my LO recently had an appt and they commented that she was 2 months (she was 12 weeks) and I said she was three months, and the lady replied that they go by the calendar so she wouldn't be three months until the 15th (born May 15th). Which way do you count?

  • I go by the calendar. It's just like pregnancy, 4 weeks does not equal a month. A 12 week old is close to three months, I'd be saying 2.5 months at that point. DD will be 12 weeks this Thursday the 13th. But will be 3 months on the 21st.

  • I go by calendar. So little one was 12 weeks last week, but won't be 3 months til the 14th. So unless I'm talking to family and giving a more exact age, I would still say my son is 2 months old or almost 3 months til the 14th

  • The first 8 weeks, I went by weeks. My LO had his '2 month checkup' and initially it was scheduled for when he was 8wks exactly. They called and rescheduled because he was a few days shy of being 2 months. She said, he had to be atleast 2 months, and explained that it was different. Now I go by the calendar.
When I have children in the future, I will probably still go by weeks until the 2month mark, just to give people a more accurate answer of how old he is in the beginning! :)
  • Agreed with PP. I told people weeks until DS hit 10 weeks. Now that we are into double digits I go by months. And months is based on the 20th, while weeks are based on Wednesday. So he's 12 weeks tomorrow but I tell people he's 2.5 months or sometimes I say he's almost 3 months. Close family still sometimes goes by weeks and so I might say it to them.
  • There are not an even 4 weeks in every month. So 8 flat weeks is not 2 months because most months have a few days into a 5 week and as we go on those start adding up causing you more weeks (hope that made sense). I tend to stick with the date nit weeks. I mean that is how most of life is. Your birthday is not on a monday if you were born on a monday (like weeks) but the date you were born in on lets say the 11th.

When you say "months", it's by the calendar. My LO is 12 weeks old.... and almost 3 months old since 3 months falls next week
  • I say he was 3 months on the 6th. I'm not one of those Mom's who needs to be politically correct. I won't be saying he's 25 months... He's 2... My son is 2.

What ever day your lo is born on every new month on that day equals another month. You can go by weeks too. The bump app actually will tell you if you don't know. My lo is 3 months old, also 13 weeks.
