Has anyone NOT had any bloodwork yet?

And how far along are you? I'm 6 weeks 3 days and haven't had any bloodwork yet because apparently they "don't feel that it's necessary" where I live. No blood work until week 11! I was mad at first after hearing about all the blood work y'all are having, but then I kind of got over it. But now another friend kind of psyched me out today and was like GET BLOODWORK NOW!!! so I'm trying to decide what to do. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?

I haven't. My first appt is 8/28 which puts me at 7w6d.

  • Nope none for me either.  My first appointment is at 9 weeks.  They'll do blood work then but won't really tell me anything unless there's a problem.  They also only do ultrasounds at 12 and 20 weeks (unless there is a problem).  With DD I was a little upset because it seems like everyone gets blood work and ultrasounds early, but this time I knew what to expect.
  • I only had blood work due to a previous loss. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    Same here.

  • I didn't get blood work done until my first appt which was at 8 weeks with my first pregnancy. I think it's normal to have to wait.

I switched practices and my new practice does a confirmation ultrasound at 6 weeks so I'm pretty excited! :)
  • I haven't. Not worrying about it.

  • None for me and I won't until my first appt (7 weeks). I remember on my last BMB with my DD do many people were sharing their numbers and I was so concerned that I was missing something important, but it isn't standard (at least not universally) unless there are pre-existing conditions

  • Ugh... I feel like they should be proactive in looking to prevent a loss, and not retroactive after one has occurred. I had to agree to Downs Syndrome Screening to get an early ultrasound between 11-13 weeks! Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten one until 20 weeks! I didn't want the screening at all, but I want to see the heartbeat so it is what it is. I dislike Quebec health care!
  • I won't have any blood work done until my first appointment which will be around 10 weeks. It was the same with my 1st - nothing until the first appointment around 8 weeks.

  • Honest question: What would blood work do to prevent a loss? Can you prevent a loss? (I mean, aside from not taking shots to the stomach)

  • I haven't but my first appointment isn't until 8/19 and I'll be 6 weeks and 2days at that point.
  • Imrachellea, that's EXACTLY how I feel, like I'm missing something important! I'm like what if my hcg isn't doubling, what if my progesterone is low, what if my thyroid is low, what if I'm anemic etc etc
  • I haven't had blood work at 6 weeks. I went in at 5w3d and peed in a cup.

Won't go back to the dr until 12 weeks.

  • KDHB13 bloodwork can prevent a loss by detecting low progesterone. They can then give you progesterone supplements, which can help to prevent a loss. Same thing for low thyroid, anemia etc it's all stuff that can be caught and treated early to help prevent a loss.
  • 6 weeks today and haven't had anything done yet. My first appt isn't until the 21st and I'll be almost 8 weeks. Don't worry about it, there will be plenty of time for you to have bloodwork done and then you'll be saying "enough already!"

  • Gotcha. They're definitely gonna do blood draws later to check for anemia! Like @cmar1006 said, you'll be like, "Again??"

  • Not yet but I have an appointment to get it on August 28th which I'll be 6 weeks by then. They said no ultrasound until 10 to 20 weeks tho.
  • :::Lurking::: There is no blood work that can really prevent a loss. The posters who have recurring blood draws most likely have suffered previous losses and/or fertility issues. Also, it's fairly standard for healthy pregnancies to have one U/S at 20 weeks.

Everyone is different, so try not to compare or overreact.
  • None here! My appt isn't until 9/9 and I'll be about 10 weeks by then
    BabyFruit Ticker}
  • None for me, and I don't anticipate any until after my first appointment. Unless you have fertility issues, previous losses, or are considered high risk, there wouldn't be a reason for any at this point.
  • Nope, but was told to expect it on 8/26 at my first appointment. Eight weeks is the earliest they see patients here.
  • But how do they know that you aren't high risk without doing any kind of testing? That's what is bothering me. At one point in time everyone who has suffered a loss wasn't considered high risk either. I'm sorry I'm just frustrated. The whole approach to first time pregnancies seems lacksidasical to me.
  • I don't have my first appointment until 09/15 and will be 10 weeks. 10 weeks was the earliest my practice will see you and no blood or anything before then :)
  • I think the logistics of running bloodwork for every pregnant woman at a practice would be a bit much to handle. They probably wouldn't be able to get to it all in a timely manner. There's plenty of time to be poked and prodded when you're pregnant. Just try to relax about it. If you're not bleeding or cramping at this point, you're probably ok.

  • There are factors (like age, pre-existing conditions, etc) that would determine if you were high risk. Unless you go through a loss you are treated as if you won't, the odds are in your favor in that regard. I know it's hard to trust that everything is ok, but there's not much else you can do. Unfortunately, that will be a common theme throughout the next 9 months between appointments.
  • I think ti's pretty standard if you're not high risk. My OB won't see me until 8-9 weeks. The initial bloodwork if you're not high risk is generally just to confirm pregnancy, which isn't really necessary these days because at home tests are so accurate.

  • I'm 6w1d and my first appointment isn't until 8/25 when I will be 8 weeks. First time pregnancy with no known medical issues. I won't have blood work or u/s until 8/25.
  • They have me going in every week because of my situation. We did IVF after several loses and 2 1/2 years of ttc. My RE (reproductive endocrinologist) has me tested over and over and early ultrasounds so I can be supplemented with meds if need be. For normal pregnancies I don't think most Dr's see you before 8 weeks. My advice would be to consider yourself lucky and try your best not to worry too much. Going for these apts every week is so nerve wracking.. Hoping everything is growing on track etc.. Unless you are over 35 or have any pre existing conditions, it's totally normal (sorry to ramble!) ☺️☺️☺️
  • Nope, not here!  It'll happen at my first appointment when they take like 8 vials, but that's routine, not beta levels.  6w here.
  • No blood test here. My first appointment is at 10 weeks. When I called to schedule I asked if I needed a blood test and they said it's not necessary because there is no such thing as a false positive. Hope that helps!

Having previous losses doesn't necessarily define a pregnancy as high risk. And blood work isn't going to do anything for that. Nothing can really be done to prevent a loss and it's not until you're further along can they check that things are developing properly. Unless you are having symptoms that say otherwise (extremely painful cramping/bright red blood) you just have to trust that everything is fine.

This is a good time to start checking out some pregnant books and educating yourself. Pregnancy Week By Week and Expecting Better are two of my favorites.

Learn to be patient. It will serve you well during parenthood. Especially during the toddler years.
  • No blood work here. My first appt is on 9/9 (I'll be 8w/3d). They will do the dating ultrasound and get my blood work done then. It is really hard to wait for the first appt!!
  • so your clinic isn't doing prenatal blood work? and they won't until IPS? that is unusual for our health care system. I thought everyone got screened for things like STIs, anemia, RH factor and blood type, rubella etc. not to prevent loss, but to check maternal health. where do you live in Quebec? is it far from a lab?
  • Mine was due to a previous loss at 8 weeks cause of low progesterone.
  • Emiliothetall, I'm 30 mins north of Gatineau so no excuse for location! They are checking all that at my first blood work, but they are waiting until 11 weeks so they can do the first down syndrome screening at the same time. I didn't want the Down's syndrome screening at all, but agreeing to it got me an ultrasound at 11-13 weeks, instead of having to wait until 20.
  • oh I see. man, usually they just want to take all the blood they can so they can bill the province!! lol.

well i guess if you really don't want the IPS, just don't go for the second blood draw at 16 weeks :) but you should look into what IPS is. It is not only screening for down syndrome. and knowledge is power.
  • No bloodwork done yet either.
Its my first pregnancy and im nervous.
First Appointment is 08/17 ill be 7 weeks and 1 day.
I really just want to hear babys heart beat.
  • I had blood work when I told my OB we wanted to start trying. We won't get anymore done until our first appointment at week 9 (I am out of town for my 8th week).
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • I have had blood work but we did IVF so I think that is the only reason why...
  • No blood test yet.  I'm 4 weeks.
