2nd Trimester

Water makes me sick

I'm almost 16 weeks pregnant with twins and I keep hearing that I should be drinking 8 glasses a water a day not only to stay hydrated but to help make the amniotic fluid for the baby pure. The problem is that for some reason ever since I got pregnant, drinking water makes me feel really sick (it makes me nauseous and at times it makes me vomit...I also have HG). Are there other ways to stay hydrated that doesn't involve drinking 8 glasses of water a day?

Re: Water makes me sick

  • Umm maybe gatorade. I say try drinking slowly. Like 1/2 a cup at a time. Otherwise you will get bad cramps like I did. I ended up in the ER.

  • Most of the sugary drinks make me sick, so, the low carb Gatorade has been one of my go to drinks or the low carb vitamin waters.
  • Maybe get some of those flavor squirts to add to your water. Drinking only vitamin water seems like it could get expensive. Or perhaps water down drinks you like to sneak in more water.

  • You could try water with a squirt or two of lemon juice. Its not sweet (unless you add sugar) and it adds a nice, lemony taste to the water that kind of tricks your brain into thinking its something else. I was having the same issue for a while, and that helped me.
  • Try putting fruit in it. I add strawberries and a slice of lemon and it then doesn't taste like plain old water and you're not adding anything bad. Another good combo is cherry lime, and orange blueberry. Good luck!
  • I have problems with water sometimes too. A squirt of lemon juice helps a lot
  • There are some good natural water flavors out there, I think crystal light has a brand. Mixing water with Gatorade or juice is a good idea.

Can you stomach fruit? When I was getting sick a lot, watermelon and cantaloupe sounded really good to me. They are high water content fruits so it helps to hydrate you. Hope you find something that works!
  • A squeeze of lemon juice in water worked really well for me too.
  • I have HG too, but singleton pregnancy. I struggle incredibly with water too. What has helped me:
    1. Not drinking much with meals but in between instead...otherwise everything just comes up.
    2. Replacing electrolytes lost from vomiting multiple times a day with Propel water and Powerade Zero (both suggested by an ER doc and are cheapest at Target).
    3. Spiking plain water with "sour" water flavoring liquid. Crystal light blackberry lemonade had been my go-to. Anything lemonade related seems to go down easier. Fresh lemon juice never worked for me.
    4. Eating frozen grapes and always having cut up watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melon in the fridge to eat when the nausea lets up.
  • Do you like seltzer water?  I find myself drinking nearly as much of that as regular water.  I think some brands have sodium in them that you might want to steer clear of, I drink a lot of Poland Spring.  Maybe the bubbles will help settle your stomach.
  • You shouldn't drink pure Gatorade or powerade as it is high in salt and sugars which is not necessarily what you need while pregnant. Mix a small amount of Gatorade with your water. Do you like carbonated water? It might be the flatness that upsets your stomach. Or try carbonated water with a few mint leaves or lemon/lime in it. I have a Sodastream and it is my favourite thing in the world!
  • My prenatal turned out to be the culprit keeping me from drinking or eating anything substantial. Some women get nausea from the iron.
  • Fellow HG sufferer here, but singleton pregnancy. I'm so sorry you're having to suffer through this, too. The one thing that keeps me going is doctors saying that having such strong symptoms means your body is doing its job well, and your baby is growing. Like you, I tried just about everything under the sun. My turning point came when I started using straws with Vitamin Water. For some reason, the straws made all the difference (perhaps easier to not drink too much all at once?). Highly recommend getting some various flavors of Vitamin Water because many of them also happen to have B6. Also, I swear by the Boost supplemental nutrition drinks! I get the high protein version and probably go through three a day. Hope you begin to get some relief!
  • I had problems drinking water as well. I squeezed a good deal of lemon (including the pulp) into my glass and sipped through a straw. The amount of fresh juice varied each refill and so did the amount I could stomach. No drinking with meals as PP mentioned. Melon, tea, carbonated water, and other water cheats proved helpful as well. My MS finally relented around 19 weeks and water is once again my bestie instead of my frenemy. Best wishes to you and I hope relief finds you soon.
  • Can you stomach infused water? With citrus or other fruits?

I agree, you can't just subsist on sugary drinks. It's not healthy or safe. It raises blood sugar which is already elevated due to pregnancy and will cause unnecessary/unfocused weight gain.
  • I would try lemonade or Gatorade. I can't have water, because I have an "inner body allergy" to it, and it has always made me really ill, given me migraines, and irritated my gums, tongue, and mouth! Even pre pregnancy. So, I've always resorted to Milk, Tea, OJ, and Apple Juice. And, at times, Gatorade and Lemonade. :)

How do you handle the water that's in all those drinks? Maybe your doc can find an answer in that? That sounds frustrating
