Work At Home

Does anyone here work from home?   My husband and I are TTC and have started discussing our finances, child care and other parenting decisions.  I would love to be a stay at home mom, but our current situation would not allow for it.  We are also noticing the cost of daycare is very expensive.  I have the opportunity to apply for a work at home position with my company.   This would allow me some flexibility with my schedule and the ability to be home everyday.   We've discussed hiring a part-time mother's helper/nanny.  If I need to take an important call, I know someone is there to supervise the baby; however, I would still be the primary caregiver.

Does anyone here work from home?  How is the situation working for you?  Did you hire someone to come in just to be an extra set of eyes if needed?

Re: Work At Home

  • Between kids I consulted for around 15-20/wk from my home and had a babysitter who watched the kids. It worked great and I liked the arrangement. The only issue was making sure my meetings/calls could be scheduled during those hours or in the evening. Also when my son got older (around 3) he always wanted to run into my office and say hi, which was a problem when on a call. Hope it works out for you!

  • DH works from home and I watch the kids. It's hard for the kids to see him or hear him and not be allowed to go in. When he steps out of the room the baby wants to be held by him and won't let go. I have to distract him and entertain him so DH can escape. On the plus side it's nice that he can get off work earlier because he's not dealing with a commute. Also, I can leave the baby napping and run out real quick to get something at the store or pick up my oldest at school with DH there listening to the baby monitor. And he can more flexible to go to a teacher meeting or something and takes short lunch breaks.

  • That sounds like a great opportunity, but you should probably plan on having some help. Most people who work from home seem to need childcare too.
I do a little work on the side staging houses, but it's only in the evenings or on weekends when DH can be home.
You could also consider rethinking your finances instead. When I first stopped working we were able to get by because we made some serious cuts from our budget. We stopped things like cable tv, eating out, going to movies etc. I did a lot of research about buying inexpensive food to make at home too. We moved to a less expensive home. It was tough for the first few years, but we made it.
