Nursery Furniture

DH and I went looking for nursery furniture and are torn between spending a lot on really good nursery furniture or saving money on a set from Babies R' Us that will likely not last as long and will show more wear/scratches.  We are only buying convertible sets that will hopefully stay with the child for a very long time.  I even joked that they could be in this furniture until college.   Anyone else thinking about nursery furniture and having this debate?

We found a decent furniture set at Target that is very reasonably priced.  Babies and kids are hard on furniture, so I don't think it's worth it to spend a lot of money on it right now.

I'm willing to dish on a rocking chair. If I'm going to be up in the middle of the night nursing I want to be the most comfortable I can be! We'll probably do a crib for around $200-$250. Not sure if that's considered a lot? I have not done too much research as of yet!

Is say 200-250 is average, and a fair price. We got a clearance set this time $270 for crib and dresser, first time was $800 for both. Way too much for us!

Crib wraps are fantastic and will save your edges. We got them when DS started mouthing his crib hard enough to leave dents. Buy what you want and purchase a little extra protection so the finishes last.

As soon as DS was able to pull him self up in his crib we put up a crib wrap on the top railing. Saved our furniture for sure! We bought a 4 in 1 crib at target for $300ish and it's actually really well made (Delta) the dresser in the other hand is a piece of crap (some other brand from target) and we wish we had spent more or at least found something higher quality. It's hard because somethings are online only and you don't always know until it's there and set up. We spent a lot more on our recliner, and it was so worth it!

Bought DS1 a fancy pricey set from pottery barn. Chewed the crap out of crib and wasn't good quality regardless. Baby 2 will be getting something much cheaper. Agree with other posters though SPEND THE MONEY ON A ROCKER/GLIDER!!!!

I like sustainability. So I would try to buy something that's made to last and spend the extra on it. Before this post I didn't know about the cover you could buy to stop wear from teething, so I'll definitely be getting something like that now! So much is made today to look nice but it's all fake, press board or laminate, etc. I'm all about finding real wood furniture that can be re-finished in the future even after its seen better days. Less waste and less money in the long run!

We bought a good crib for $325. But we didn't want convertible. We thought about it and in all reality we will end up doing something different during toddler years. If my husband has anything to do with it, he (if he's a boy) will probably get something like a race car bed or fire truck bed. Whatever he's into. And if she's a girl, I'm sure it'll be princess something or another if that's what she is into. We didn't want to spend the extra chunk of money to go convertible when who knows if we actually would.

I spent the money the first time around and I don't regret it. (Well I didn't my mom did) she got us a nursery set with number one and really splurged. I think the crib was around 1000 alone. It has held up perfectly and baby number 3 will be using the same one. I'd say spend the extra money if you can.

We are lucky enough to only have to buy a crib.  We had an old dresser, two actually, that we are going to refinish and use as the changing table and storage for babies clothes.  The one that we liked was also at Babies R Us, is a convertible crib and costs $450.  IMO, that's pretty reasonable, considering it's the only piece of furniture we have to buy.  My husband wants to splurge on a crib from Pottery Barn Kids, but I do not see spending $700 + on one. Had I known we would be having a child sooner than later, I would have totally scoped out the PBK near me when they were going out of business and tried to buy one on clearance.

We got our furniture for DD from wayfair.com. They had a good selection of name brand stuff at great prices and free shipping. The crib we have is a convertible DaVinci crib that was around $200. It has held up very well.

Pottery barn kids is having a sale that lasts through today! We got a $600 crib for $200!! We figured that was a pretty good deal based on the comparison shopping we did. Shipping was cheap too.

We got a $170 crib for our first that is going strong and will be used for number 3. Each of my older two got a nice bed/dresser/nightstand set around age 2.5 that will hopefully last them until their teenage years.

Just looked at PB Kids! Holy deals batman! Think we're gonna pull the trigger on a crib today that's more than half off! And gorgeous!

I bought a crib yesterday which was originally $899 on sale (floor model) for $320. It is very good quality as well. The company just went out of business so we just happened to find it at a good time since they were trying to get rid of it (they did not have a full matching set with night stand, dresser, etc., which we were fine with). It's actually a convertible crib but I doubt we will use it for anything other than a crib. Like others are saying there is a great chance that the baby will chew on it, etc. so really paying a ton for a crib doesn't make much sense, in my opinion. We did spend more money on the dresser though and it is super nice quality since it is a piece of furniture that we can use for years to come. I'm always looking for a good deal, so it took us several stores before finding any nice/quality furniture on sale.

laxdixdar you are very welcome! I got the email on Friday, and we weren't planning on buying anything yet either, but I couldn't pass up such a good deal! I am excited to get it. We ordered the Catalina in the Espresso color. Pottery Barn has nice stuff, but it's usually a lot more than I am willing to spend.

@babybluu great minds think alike! I'm keeping my eye out for future sales on the matching dresser/changing tables (in the espresso color). I'll let you know if I find any good ones!

Okay wonderful thanks! I'm starting to feel prepared now. About to be 20 weeks in a few days and don't have anything prepared for the nursery. Wanna have it done by thanksgiving since we are due the day after New Years. yikes!

I agree that if you want to use the crib for a long period, put rail covers on from the get-go. Also, be aware that you usually have to purchase a conversion kit separately to change the crib/toddler bed into a full size bed. The conversion kits can be expensive and can be discontinued, so consider buying it when you buy your crib if you plan on converting it.

@laxdixdar we got the Jordan too! It's so modern and funky. I can't wait to use it as the decor centerpiece. I've been pinteresting nursery decor for hours!

My husband built a changing table got the plans on Pinterest. We are in the process for repurposing an old dresser to match. I was looking at cribs in Amazon and with my prime account they are a $100 cheaper then in baby's r us. Working off 2 teachers salaries here.
