Hungry after csection?

I have my csection scheduled for August 21, 11:30am. This is new territory for me and I'm still getting used to the thought of giving birth in an OR. I know I can't eat or drink anything after midnight. My question for BTDT moms is were you hungry after you came out of surgery? I am not sure if I should pack snacks or just rely on the hospital food or plan to send my husband out for something. How did you feel afterwards? TIA for the advice!

Re: Hungry after csection?

  • Depending on your dr/hospital they may not want you to eat right after. My dr ordered me a regular diet but my nurse suggested starting with clear liquids so that's what I did. I honestly wasn't even very hungry. I just got jello for lunch, then by dinner I ordered a grilled cheese which I tolerated fine.

  • Right after I wasn't very hungry at all, between the pain meds, being on a natural high and tired. Although later in the evening I was a little hungry, I would rely on ordering a meal from the hospital cafeteria to come to your room, only because after a csec it hurts like hell to pre and poop, using those muscles to poop especially. The doc may have a specific diet to follow while your in there to ensure you are getting enough fiber and hydration so that you may,go #2 without too much pain. Also passing gas hurts too so stay away from foods that can and could make you gassy.
  • I labored for 34hrs and 14hrs before my csections without food so I was starving. I told them they could take their clear liquid diet and shove it. Thankfully I didn't get sick but it's a real possibility if your gut slows or stops following surgery. I had good bowel sounds after surgery.

  • I was definitely hungry. This was my second c-section, and it was worse this time. My first one was scheduled for early in the morning, so I don't think I had much time to feel hungry at first. This baby decided to come unexpectedly when my water broke at 2:15am last week. I was starving by the time I was allowed to eat, which wasn't until dinner time. They usually don't let you eat for a while after surgery because they want to make sure the anesthesia doesn't make you sick. I didn't bring any snacks, but my hospital has an amazing birthing suite with decent food. Every room even has a fridge & microwave, so I ordered extra food with every meal so that I would have snacks to eat in the middle of the night.

  • I was not hungry until 2 days after my surgery. The morning after I was good with veggie broth, ice water and juice. Then I had fruit like watermelon and Italian ice. I didn't eat any "real food" until the day I was discharged (surgery was on 8/4 pm and left on 8/6 afternoon). You will most likely be on IV fluids, and pain killers so you may not have an appetite but I'm sure everyone is different. They told me I could have clear liquids and once you can "pass gas" you can start having more solid food, but I didn't even want any right away.

  • Have you had anesthesia before? You will likely react the same as coming out of general anesthesia. They want you to stay on clear liquids the first night. I stayed on liquids for about 4 hours then munched on graham crackers that night... and a lot of them because I was hungry. That being said I've always eaten after general anesthesia and been fine, no nausea. However if there's ANY doubt I'd play it safe and stick to hungry. Throwing up with after a c section with that incision in your abdomen must be miserable... but I'd bring snacks either way because I got very hungry during the course of my stay (mostly due to catching up from a day of not eating and BFing). Good luck mama. You'll do great

My Csection was at 10:30am, I had ice chips immediately after, and then jello - my advice is take it slow because a few hours after I got super nauseous and threw up a few times - NOT pleasant after abdominal surgery!!! I waited til I knew I was tolerating crackers and clear liquids - first meal was at 7am the next day and went fine.
  • Thanks for the stories ladies! I've never been under anesthesia before so this is all new. I have been pretty neasous this whole pregnancy so a big meal that night probably isn't a good idea. But I'll take some jello over nothing :)
  • My emergency c section was at 4pm and I had to wait until breakfast the next day until I was allowed to eat again. It sucked because I'd had an early lite breakfast the day of my c section and ended up going 27 hours with no food after that. Only clear liquids. My first real food was chick fil a and it was totally fine, no problems :-)
  • I just had my csection yesterday but mine was at 9am..I wasn't hungry and after I was only allowed clear broths until about 9pm at night (and by then I had started to get hungry). I think I was thinking more about being able to have a glass of water after recovery then anything else! Lol

  • omg I was friggin starving! Had my c section at 5:00pm on 7-11. They had me on clear liquids for almost a full day. by 12 pm the next day, DH snuck me a bagel and I devoured it. I am not condoning my behavior with breaking the doctors orders, but im sorry, I HAD to eat something or else I was going to strangle someone. lol.
Always hold on to hope ❤
  • I was on clear the first day then switched to solids the next morning.

So we will see what Dr says monday about my vbac or a csectiin
  • I labored for 12 hours and tried to push for 6 before my c-section with no food and right after my section I wasn't hungry at all nor was I allowed anything but clear liquids for like 8 hours after my surgery but I also threw up several times while laboring and again right after they pulled my little girl out so they really wanted me to take it slow.
  • I had a specific diet I had to start with afterwards.

  • I was STARVING after my c-section. I was allowed ice chips in the first 30 minutes, water in the next 30, crackers after 1.5 hours and then a regular diet after that. I had some bouts with nausea, but as soon as I mentioned it the nurses gave me zofran which worked.
  • I was induced, no c-section. BUT I couldn't eat form midnight until about 9pm. I was honestly not hungry, but I felt like eating, if that makes sense. Unfortunately, the cafeteria was closed ans the sandwiches they had on offer had meat, which I don't eat, so it was just pb crackers until the next morning. I think the IV fluids helped keep me from getting hungry.
  • My c section was at 9am. I was allowed clear liquids that first day. The next morning soft foods (liquids, oatmeal, yogurt). Then I was on regular food. After passing gas you will likely be able to eat a normal diet. Take it easy though because you do.not.want to get constipated on top of a c-section. Worst pain of my life

  • I wasn't expecting to have my C section the day I did, so I went in having not eaten anything since the night before... Then they admitted me and scheduled my C section for 6:30 pm so it was almost 24 hours of not eating. I was hungrier before the C section than I was after. But I also knew that I usually don't react well to anesthesia and throw up after. I told them this and they have me zofran with my spinal. Didn't feel nauseous at all afterwards. I was super thirsty more than anything so they started me on ice chips, then water, then offers me graham crackers or saltines. By the next morning they were fine with me eating breakfast as long as I was up for it.
  • I was in labor about 24 hours when I went for my section. I was starving by the time I got out. My dr didn't say anything about what I couldn't or should eat.
  • Honestly, I still haven't fully gotten my appetite back 2 weeks later (and I LOVE food).

I was being induced and had to have clear liquids the day of. Once in l&d, ice chips only. I labored over 24 hrs and pushed for 2 before my emergency C-section. Afterwards, I was so nauseous by everything I received (epidurals and spine blocks do not do anything for me, I had a special cocktail )that I didn't want to eat. I delivered my baby 2:11 in the morning and was not allowed to drink anything till 8am that morning. Started off with clear liquids, then full liquids by lunch and regular diet the next day. It depends on you, your doctors orders, or your hospitals policy. You may be put on a regular diet, but really might not want anything
