Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Do I really need a d&c?

So yesterday we went for our first ultrasound at 11w just to receive the horrible news that our precious "little nugget" fell asleep at 7w4d :(
This wasn't a complete shock as I did feel the pregancy symptoms getting milder way too early and on top of it I had a heavy bleeding the day before...my worst fears became reality only shortly after.
My doc gave me 3 options for the m/c to end and I chose to do it the natural way, wait until my body is finally ready to let go.
Well today we received the phonecall from my doc telling me I'm scheduled for d&c tomorrow morning and there is no way around it? I asked her why and she said it's because of my hcg levels being high at 32000 despite that it has been 4w since our nugget fell asleep. I tried to argue saying that I really wanted to do it the natural way, but she insisted explaining to me that I'm at high risk of extreme pain, bleeding and passing too much tissue and infection.
Now I read on many message boards that women with similar stories pass it naturally without any issues, some being even further along than my little one at 7w4d...
Should I seek a second opinion?
Thank you so much for any input...

  • I wonder if another concern is a molar pregnancy. With a molar pregnancy, I have read your hormone levels continue to go up instead of down. If that is the case, they can test for that and treat you for that to prevent future problems. You may want to call and see if that is a concern they are having. So sorry for your loss.

  • I am not sure about the hormones but I know the longer the body waits to realize the mc the more susceptible you are to infection. So sorry you are going through this.

You can say no to the D&C. My doctor tried to push it with both my MCs, she was actually rude when I firmly said NO. I was 13w & 6w. It sucks and I'm sorry for your loss, but I would not trade the privacy of my MCs for the clinical D&C experience. Yes, it's painful and once that's over you bleed for 4-5 more days. And it takes up to 6 weeks for your hormones to go back to zero. But I found it was healing in its own way.

I'm now pregnant 3rd time and I have a new OB as a result.
  • I had a similar experience. The doctor couldn't completely rule out an ectopic pregnancy, so she wanted to do a D&C to confirm that it was in the uterus and not somewhere else. Ultimately it is your decision, but a D&C really isn't that terrible. I got mine on Tuesday morning, and my bleeding stopped within 24 hours and I'm only experiencing mild cramps now.
