How popular of a name will you pick for your child?

I'm just curious on what peoples personal rules are for naming their children as far as where the names falls on the top 100 list.

I personally don't want anything in the top 30 ish but I'm tempted to pick one that might be on the cusp of moving up.

Would you pick a name it the top 10? 20? 50? 100?

Well last time I was faced with the name being in the top 10 list, but as my daughter is named after someone specific we couldn't exactly change it. This time I'd still like a classic name, but hopefully off the top 100 so there isn't as much confusion when I call his or her name in the park, lol

  • Our top girl name is not on any list really it's not a made up but it's unique.

Our current top boy name is in the 300's
  • Personally I'm.staying away from those Top lists. If we pick one that happens to be on them then so be it but I'm trying to stay away from trendy names. Who knows though, the name thing has been a battle for us cause everything I love he vetoes and vice versa..

  • When looking at the name lists, I tried to stay between #100-300. I don't want anything too common that there will be multiples in their classes, but not too crazy..

  • Our son's name is Caleb. I love that it's classic without being in the top 10. It's been in the thirties for the last fifteen years. I just looked that up, actually, and it surprises me because I haven't met another Caleb ever.

I have definitely struck at least a few names from our potential girl list because they're top ten (Olivia, Charlotte, Mia) names. Nothing wrong with having a top ten name, but I don't like how trendy they are and I don't want my kid to have to go by their initial their entire lives.

We don't live or die by the name list, though. I usually don't even check the popularity of names we put on our list, because they are looong lists and we don't name our kids until after they're born and we get to know them a bit.

  • The girl name I think I am set on is in the top 200 and we can't come up with any boy names we love, but we like more traditional/classic names so I'm sure the boy name would be in the top 100.

For my already born kids neither name was on the top 100 for our state.

    In 2013 for the US:
    Isla: 167
    Halle: 694

For this baby, it was hard for us to agree on names but for the US in 2014 (2015 not yet available):

    Silas: 137
    Stella: 66

For this baby by state, both names seem to be more "popular" but not many kids really have either name:

    Silas:87 (50 boys named this)
Stella: 29 (73 girls named this)

    Still overall not too popular.

The girl name I chose was ranked 288 in 2014 and my boy name is not even in the top 1000. But I had all my baby names picked out by 2009. I think it depends on how long I have like that name. But I wouldn't want a top 10 popular baby name.
  • I really love some of the classic names, but my 2 names for this time are not on the lists, because they have to do with where we live. Baby names are so much fun!!

  • We didn't base our names at all in stats. It's hard enough to get DH and I on the same page for names with out having to factor in if its popular or not! Lol we're going with Joel Duane for a boy and Ellie Marie (we will call her Elle). For a girl. Middle names are family names and first names we just liked.

My son's name is #628 for boys.  For this baby, the boy name we have chosen is #116 for boys, the girl's is either #131 or #189 for girls depending on how we spell it.  I come from a very Italian family, so they are Italian names.  I'm sure if we looked at such a list from Italy, the names would be more common, but I'm perfectly content with them being unique... I actually kind of prefer it that way!

Ironically MY first choice girls name is #10954, but my husband vetoed that name already lol.

  • I won't name my child a top ten and preferably not a top 30. For my son we loved Jack nn for Jackson but it was in the top ten then. We decided on John with the option to use Jack as a nn instead. It worked out perfect and John fits my son very well. Only the grandparents call him Jack.

  • It really doesn't matter to me, DD is Emma Olivia so I guess we hit #2 and #3 (the year we named her).  If I like a name I'm not going to take it out of consideration because of popularity.  But H and I both have unusual names and get called everything but ALL THE TIME.  So I think for me people being able to spell and say my children's names is kind of important.  Now for this baby I am considering some not-so-top-10 names but that's just because its what I like (family names, etc).

  • We're staying away from anything in the top 100.  My husband's family is Eastern European and he wants to give the baby a family name, and if he gets his way, our baby will end up with a pretty obscure name, at least in the states.

  • My kids so far have ended up with statistically "popular" names. They were picked years before though so luck of the draw I guess. Despite them being in the top five of their year of birth, at least the girls, both are in school with no one else with their name in their grade.

  • Our top girl name peaked in 1918 and is currently ranked 186 but is trending upwards.

I don't have a top boy name yet but the one my husband selected has never been popular in the US.

I don't think we could ever pick a really common name because one of us always ends up having some weird association with it.

  • I agree with @Twindling.  I would check out the popularity of the names in your area.  Both of our kids have names that are in the top 100 i believe or were at that time.  I currently have an Alyssa and a Luke.  I love both names though, and i think that should have something to do with it to.  My advice is to LOVE the name and worry about its ranking later.

  • I would avoid the top ten names of 2014 but that is it. Every area has different top names. I prefer a real name spelled correctly and in the top 500.

  • Our girl name is on the top 100 (I think) but we're naming her after my Grammy, not because of where it falls on a list.

Our boy name isn't, but one of the middle name choices is, but again that's not related to our reasons for choosing the names :)
  • Our girl name is in the mid-500s in the US, but our boy name has never been in the top 1000 in the US, though it's top 20 in Scotland (my husband is a kilt-wearing Scottish-American)
  • I'm all for liking a certain name but some of my friends named their kids top 10 names and whenever we go to the park there are like the other moms calling out for kids with the same name. It gets so confusing.
  • Ps. I used the ssa.gov/babynames site for legit stats on a name.

Not nameberry or anything of the sort. Those are not accurate :)

  • I don't want something so unoriginal that no one can pronounce it and will never spell it correctly ( I grew up with this problem) but I can't stand the incredibly popular names.. Even if I think they are cute. I guess what I mean by can't stand is the fact that there will be so many kids the same age with the same name. So many mom's on my Facebook have Jackson's, Jaxon's, etc. My daughter was in a large gymnastics class this year and there were a lot of variations of the names that sound the same like Ella, Ellie, Elle, Eva, Olivia, etc. Well ok Ella and Olivia are different but there were at least 2 of each. It's crazy!! My daughter and son have names that aren't top 100 but they aren't way out there either. Hoping to do the same with this one too.

But the others are right. It depends a lot on area. You might not hear those names I listed so much elsewhere. They are just incredibly popular right now where I live, which is what I want to avoid. Top names don't bother me if I haven't personally heard them 5+ times or over and over again.

  • Both of our kids names were around the 150s at the time of their birth. We have no idea on names this time but I won't go top 20 or so.

  • Ok now I know the actual popularity, thanks @Twindling!

Our girl name is 219 (851 for the middle name)
Our boy name is 179 (93 or 242 for the middle name depending on what we choose)
  • Our name will probably be out of the top 100, but out of the top 50 for sure. Anything higher than that is too common and I really don't like using it. I don't have a common name and yet there were so many Amanda's in my elementary school classes that I was constantly getting called it. It was annoying.
  • Well, I'm a music teacher in an elementary school so I have anywhere from 750-900 students every year. This will be my 14th year, so that's a LOT of names that have been ruined lol! ;)

Interestingly, our girl name is not common but a lady I work with just chose it for her girl who is due in November so yeah...not picking that.

Since I will probably need a boy name, I am really stuck since we have already used up out two top names! Ahhhh!

  • The names I like right now for girls rank 50 something and 70 something and I hate that they are even top 100. My name is Emily and as we all know it reigned as number one for many years, however when I was named it, it wasn't even a thought for most people. I'm afraid that my children will experience the same thing. My boy name is also top 75.
  • I'm not really going to look at the ranking, but if I have a bunch of students right now with the name it probably won't happen. I really don't want my kids to have the same name as 7 others in their grade.

  • Both of our names are in the top ten. But they are classic and named after family members. My name is Martha which has not topped any list anytime lately :) i do appreciate that it's unique and would love a unique name for the kiddo but we just love these two classic family names!
  • We're not even going to look at the lists, I don't want popularity to have a say in what I pick as the name for my firstborn :)
  • Our girl name is like top 5 right now, but I picked it a few years ago without looking at lists. I love it and tried to pick a different name I liked, but nothing compares. DH and I decided we like the name, so if it's a girl that's what we're going with. Emma Belle :)

Well our son's name is Lincoln and I don't know the exact popularity it is - I read somewhere it was 87th for boys in 2014 but don't know how accurate that is. I personally know of 3 other Lincoln's similar in age to my son, I keep telling my husband I hope it doesn't turn into another "Ashley" name by popularity lol, that's my name if you couldn't guess ;)

We haven't even started thinking of names until we know the sex of the baby - I am almost positive we will have another boy anyway. There's been a few times I've tried talking names with my husband, only boy names lol because we only see ourselves having sons but every name I love my husband hates and vice versa.

edit: since I didn't fully answer the question - we absolutely do not want a top 30 name, I just don't want him to have to go thru what I did in school, I had about 5 other Ashley's in my class with a total graduating class of 120ish. I hated having to go by "Ashley D." etc.

  • I'm trying to go original while preserving my kid's ability to have teachers and such to pronounce their name! My parents named me Kelsea and just having an "a" instead of a "y" at the end somehow confuses about 65% of the population into mispronunciation of some kind! Neither of the names I like appear on any "top" lists to my knowledge. I'd never even heard of one of them before searching for unique baby names, and the other is a character referenced but not appearing in a popular TV show. I'm not telling because I don't want them to wind up the next mega overused names! They both start with "Rh" coincidentally. One is unisex and one is a boy name. Good luck with your searches!
