GTKY: Phobias

Re: GTKY: Phobias

  • Crickets! Not sure why grasshoppers aren't included in my irrationality, but they are so crunchy and hoppy and terrrrrrrible! I was traumatized as a child by a friends older brother...he threw one in my direction and it ended up caught and tangled in my hair and I could feel it kicking against my head....ugh...still gives me the chills!

Moths! The are dusty and fluttery and unpredictable...they'll dive bomb you in the face or mouth and get stuck! Yikes! They used to get in my car from the vents and when I'd turn on the air/heat, they'd coming barreling out the air vents into my car and swarm me!

June bugs! See above criterion...crunchy...unpredictable...swarms of them dive bombing your face and body. Just the worst.

All three, totally irrational. I know they can't "hurt" me but that doesn't change any of my reactions. Give me a predictable bug like a spider or ant or rolypoly...I know where they're going ;)

  • Death. I'm terrified of dying and dying in the most brutal way. (things falling from skyrises and being crushes, getting hit by bus or train, car accident) I hate being too close to knives if i'm not using them to cut food. My neck is super sensitive, if anything touches it I'm guaranteed to lose all feeling in my arms and legs and faint.

Because of the car accident we were in last summer, I'm absolutely terrified to get in a taxi. She ran a stop sign and nearly got us killed. I guess that explains my fear of dying. Now, I can't even get in a taxi without hyperventilating or feeling faint. I fainted in one a couple of months ago then vomited everywhere when we stepped out. It's awful.

@jenn2132 one of my former student was the same way!! And she went to nursing school!! I'm afraid of elevators (piled a whole volleyball team on an elevator in high school while we were at volleyball camp and the elevator definitely dropped half a floor and we had to climb out!!!!), hospitals, and having my BP taken. Needless to say, each OB visit is is so much funn!

I'm with you on the elevator! I really hate the ones in hospitals that open from both sides. We visited my grandmother in the hospital many years ago and someone entered on the other side, which I didn't know could open, so suddenly someone was standing behind me... Too creepy!

I hate having doors open when it's dark. We have the nursery door open so the dogs get used to going in there and smelling baby stuff, but when it was the spare bedroom, it was always closed. I'm always weary that something is hiding in there. I feel the same way about our garage, especially after the neighbor told us that the previous owner hanged himself in there...

Edited: what is wrong with the quote box? looks odd.

  • My SO loves to play pranks. I'm traumatized at night time to walk by an open window or window without the curtain drawn.my heart rate will spike.
Example our last rental home, the kitchen sink had 2 windows above it and just outside was our deck. At night, either cooking or cleaning up dinner I would have the lights on inside and could really only see my reflection in the window -not what's in the darkness outside. Because of my weary thoughts my SO would be home later than me would sneak up on the deck and bang on the window scaring the crap out of me.

Now I just get anxiety closing the curtains when it's dark.

We leave our doors open to the screen doors at night for the cool air and I have just been informed twice this week I woke up screaming 'we left the doors and windows open' 'they are going to get us' which prompted SO out of his sleep to sprint down stairs to find them closed and locked. Lol in a way it's payback ?
  • I don't like:
    Spiders
    Doctors
Pills (phobia of choking on them)

My little girl has helped me over come a lot. I've never had my blood drawn until I got pregnant. I have bad anxiety but I try my best for my little girl.
  • I'm terrified of open water, if it's an ocean and I can't see bottom there is NO WAY in hell your getting me in there, I'm convinced I'm going to get eaten by a shark, and I can only doggy paddle !!!!
  • Flying. It's getting better but there were a few years where getting on a plane required excessive (and expensive!) airport drinking preflight. Obviously that hasn't been possible lately so I've had to manage the last 1/2 dozen flight sober. :-<
  • Alright girls, I have a weird one. It's called "typophobia" I believe--google it if you would like and DONT SHOW ME. Basically it's this weird fear of textured patterns or dots, usually arranged in some type of way. The extreme version is gross looking to anyone, but I am legit afraid and get anxiety just thinking about it. It could even be on a way simpler level for me like a drain with a bunch of dots in it. Google will probably show you the worst of the worst--YUCK!! Another example is of a "lotus seed pod". Ahhh I am freaking out already! Haha. Okay--now you girls really know me cause it's quite embarrassing to admit!

OMG ME TOO!!! It makes me so itchy and squirmy just thinking about ugh! I remember NPR did something on it and all over my FB news feed and app there were pictures of that stupid lotus seed pod UGH  totally creeps me out!!
  • @elmann1 I have to avoid Facebook completely every time one of those goes around! I hate it so much!
  • I am super afraid of canned biscuits. (The ones like Pillsbury grands or cresent rolls come in) because of the loud sudden pop noise they make when opened... I make DH open them, also afraid of being in elevators by myself seeing I was stuck in one for 2 hours as a child by myself.

This totally just gave me the heebie jeebies. Thanks!
  • I am super afraid of spiders! Where I live, we have these huge wolf spiders. It wasn't until I moved in the house I live in now that I have ever seen a spider that big! Just the other morning I found one in my kitchen and threw a shoe at it hoping to scare it away because I'm too scared to get close to them. (They jump and are very aggressive) The shoe landed on the damn thing, and to my amazement and utmost fear, millions (ok probably thousands) of little baby spiders scattered everywhere. I forgot I was pregnant and hopped up on my kitchen counter to escape them. My husband came in the room to see me spraying the floor down with simple green lol! I can barely breathe when using that stuff so I figured it would suffocate them as well. It worked and my kitchen floor has never been so clean!

  • Ditto on the mice and moths. I actually have a pretty paralyzingly fear of them. My DD always love the pet shops and wants to go look. NOPE not this Mama. You are On Your own kid! Also really big heights, like cliffs with edges that fall off into a disastrous death...
Oh and water. Not like showers or baths or pools. But natural bodies of water like lakes, oceans, and rivers. Ones that I will die in or that have fish that will bite your toes. Ugh. I can't even watch a movie that has anything to do with people being in the water! Forget it. Gotta go, panic setting in just thinking about it!

  • @Knottie16288692 I would move! So scary!

  • Yeah... unfortunately we are in a lease for another year. My husband is traveling for work this week and omg this morning I was trying to pick out something to wear and I reached to get a shirt down. Halfway there I saw one on the shirt sleeve! I totally freaked and opted for a t shirt that was folded in a drawer... in another room.  The closet is now off limits until my husband comes home tonight. He is totally not allowed to leave again. He is the designated spider killer.. he made that vow on our wedding day. No joke.

But seriously, I'm going to have a long talk with my landlords. I'm terrified of these spiders getting in my bed at night, or worse my childs crib.

  • Anyone else get these spider-cricket hybrids!? I don't know their real names, but they are the WORST. My first encounter with one was last year outside and I thought it was just a big ass spider so I tried to shoo it away and then it JUMPED and I realized it's spidery legs were actually cricket-like. Terrifying. More terrifying was realizing they like to live in the unfinished part of our basement, where our washer/dryer is. They're like the worst of the insect world: creepy, crawly, large, and jumpy. Ick!
  • I hate touching my food with my hands. I eat everything with a fork and knife, and it's pretty embarrassing. I'm fine touching food with my hands if I'm not eating it I guess (such as washing dishes).

I'm extremely claustrophobic because I had to get stitches when I was 2 years old, and they restrained me in a straight jacket. It scarred me, and anytime I can't move freely I flip.

My biggest fear in the WORLD is people in animal costumes or masks. I'm usually fine with mascots, and some Halloween masks. But for the most part, I hate masks. I'm HORRIBLY terrified of "furries". Bunny costumes are the worst. I will get up and RUN FOR MY LIFE if someone in a full body animal costume is near me. It is a fear I simply cannot overcome.

    ;)
  • @BrooklynBroussard I used to hate touching my food too! I used to eat fries with a fork!? The only reason I got out of that habit was basic training for the army. 5 minutes to eat was NOT enough time to cut my food!
  • @lnord7 YES! I almost died when one jumped out of my laundry machine. I will never leave the washer lid open again. Those things are so creepy.
  • I'm with everyone else on spiders and mice!

My biggest fears are my house catching on fire & someone breaking in to my house at night (Both of which have happened, but fortunately I wasn't home when my house was broken into)

I also had an issue a couple of years ago with a man (husband of a customer) stalking and harrassing me, so now I'm extremely cautious of people watching me and my surroundings.

I'm also terrified to walk across street grates or manhole covers and am scare my shoe laces will get caught in an escalator.

    Frogs.
    Mice
And flying bugs like moths and praying mantis

Can't deal with any of these things.

Omg frogs. I am terrified of frogs. I blame it on my mom. When she was pregnant with me she heard a noise that she said sounded like a frog but coming from her stomach and she freaked out. She ran to her neighbor's house and the neighbor told her it was me crying in the womb. My mom's moment of panic caused me a lifetime phobia.
  • @lnord7 these freakin things?! It's a camel cricket. My old house had them like crazy in our laundry room. THEY'RE AWFUL!!
  • I also have a completely irrational fear of clowns. Not because of any movies but because the thought of a grown man or woman in a onesie traveling in a camper from town to town wearing colorful makeup and smelly wigs is just...really off-putting.
  • I can't stand..
The dark or any dimly lit area. I hate not being able to see and be aware of my surroundings.
Im with the Pp about my sternum being touched, it induces panic attacks.
Clowns...because they just make my skin crawl.
Driving on the highway near semi trucks, my cousin was ran off the road and in a fatal accident because of those machines. I just can't.
  • WHY WOULD YOU POST A PICTURE, @DeeGreer ?! I literally shrieked and dropped the phone hahaha

But yeah, it's those little bastards I'm referring to. Ugghhh
  • I just realized I skipped one...Freddy Krueger. I've only ever watched Freddy vs Jason and that's as close to him as I get. He freaks me out. People dressed as him And even seeing a sweater like his freaks me out. I was on a haunted hayride once and warned my group of friends I wouldn't react well if he popped out. Well we stopped at one of the stops and he came out tapping those blade like fingers on the side of the hay wagon. I jumped into the middle of the wagon arms wrapped completely around my legs and started rocking. Of course for fun he came over closer to me and pretended to reach for me. I was all but in tears by the time we started moving again. I also punched my neighbor once for dressing as him (I warned her and her mom weeks prior). She came up to me on TOT and wouldn't leave me go. I told her mom I was going to hit her (I had to pass her to get in my house) and her mom told me to go for it. So I hit her in the stomach and ran inside.
