2nd Trimester

First time pregnant, can't find nasal bone - freaking out!

I went for my 18 week ultrasound, everything came back perfect, except not being able to find the nasal bone. I'm told this increases my chance for my baby to have DS. I go to a specialist for more testing in a week, but the wait is killing me! The previous tests came back negative for DS. Anyone have any info on this kind of situation?

  • At my 19 week ultrasound they couldn't find the heart (found it just fine at 22 weeks). Doesn't mean it's not there, just means they couldn't find it at that moment. It's entirely possible everything is fine and normal; I wouldn't stress about it until you have conclusive information.

  • Thank you! Hearing stories like that make me feel ten times better. The fiancé and I are staying optimistic on the situation, just waiting is always hard.
  • I have two friends who had potential abnormalities during their 20 week ultrasounds that they were told could be associated with down's syndrome.  One had excess amniotic fluid and the other had blood in the baby's intestines.  Both turned out to be 100% healthy.  I'm sure I would be freaking out if I were in your position (and I'm dreading my 20 week ultrasound next week for that reason!) but it sounds like there are a lot of false alarms. Definitely keep us updated!
  • We did our genetics screen at 12 weeks and they couldn't find the nasal bone either. They said that based on the blood tests it was only a 1 in 10,000 chance of DS even without being able to see the bone. Could just be the baby wasn't in a good position to allow them to find it

I definitely will keep you updated Whit, the bump community is what has been keeping me sane the whole pregnancy! I'm sure your 20 week ultrasound will be nothing less than perfect, let us all know how it goes. Thanks for sharing Nackie, it's always a relief to hear things like that. I'm hoping that's the case here. We find out Tuesday!
  • They couldn't view the front of babies heart or nasal bone at my 20 weekb because he just wouldn't turn from his side! Doc made a point of reassuring us nothing was wrong, there are just some times ultrasound can't catch everything. We have another scheduled at 24 weeks, so hopefully baby cooperates.

I would say, if you don't have other big risk factors, don't stress.
  • That is great news - I'm so glad everything turned out to be ok!!! I have my 20 week ultrasound tomorrow morning so fingers crossed that it goes smoothly. After two miscarriages, I have a very low threshold for pregnancy scares!  Anyway, congrats again on the good news!
  • I'm glad they were able to find the nasal bone:). I'm worried about my anatomy scan next week bc every ultrasound we have had his has had his back towards the front of my belly so I'm afraid he won't cooperate and let us get a view from the front so they can check everything they need to.
