Baby Names

Sibling for Ariadne

I'm struggling to find a name combination for our little one on the way that sings to me as much as our daughter's name - Ariadne Mira.

The combinations we have so far agreed on are:

Boy - Ender Leonid
Girl - Petra Alcyone (al-SIE-ə-nee)

Ender has been a longtime favourite for us. Petra I am adoring because it is a variant of Peter, and my deceased father's name was Peter. We also have an astronomy/space middle name theme going on if you can't tell :)

Other names on our list:
Cordelia, Gretchen, Persephone, Cressida, Capella.
Kepler, Altair, Rigel.

Any thoughts on our top choices so far, or other suggestions we could throw on the table?

TIA!

Re: Sibling for Ariadne

  • Have you seen the movie Ender's Game? The two main characters are named Ender and Petra, so that's my immediate association with both names.
I think they both would sound fine with your daughter's name, and I don't mind either of them.

I want to use this thread as an example of what unique names actually look like, instead of Bexxleigh Zapp Jazzilyn Preszleeighellah

OP - love Petra and the family meaning. Like all of your other girl names, but Capella is my least favorite. Makes me think of music and singing a capella. Which might be what you're going for, I don't know.

I'm not even familiar with the boy names, but think Kepler would be the one least likely to be confused with other names.

Edit: also love how Leonid sounds. Reminds me of the meteor shower every August. (For me, that's a good thing. Always around my birthday)

Yes! That's where Ender came from - however, the funny thing is I found Petra not even thinking of EG. Funny how it worked out to be a favourite though!
  • I actually know a Ariadne! She has two brothers, one with a very very common name, the other named Elias. I thought Elias was a nice choice.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • How do you pronounce your daughter's name? I've never heard it before.

I actually think your top choices are the best ones, although Petra's middle name will be hard for people at the DMV and things like that. But that isn't every day, so not the worst thing. I really like that Petra is a variant of your dad's name.

Thank you for the responses! We are definitely more drawn to names that are quite uncommon, so it's nice to know that we aren't throwing out names that sound totally bizarre!

We pronounce Ariadne the English way - ar-ee-AD-nee. We've had to help other's pronounce her name a lot over the years, but it's never bothered us because we just love it that much. I get a kick out of it when someone recognizes her name from Greek mythology as most have never heard of it.

Edit: Just noticed that the screen name I updated prior to my initial post finally switched over - I am OP :)
  • I like Ariadne! Very cool name, we're considering Guinevere for this baby. I like Olwen too. Petra is pretty and Ender is also unique and nice.
  • I like Petra and the meaning, but I love the way Cressida goes with you're daughter's name. Persephone is nice too. Not a huge fan of the boy names.

  • Petra is really cool. I love it. It needs and equally cool middle name. Cordelia is my top choice from your list.

    Petra Calliope
    Petra Penelope
    Petra Thais
    Petra Helene

Not into Ender but it's just bc its not my style!

  • I LOVE Petra!!
    Ender not so much

I just want to say that this post makes me feel even better about choosing the name Ione for my daughter. I love original names that aren't made up! And I LOVE Petra and Ender. They both fit with Ariadne :-)

  • Love Petra and Ender -- immediately thought of the Ender's Game series (I've read all the books). I think they're both good, so long as you don't use them both eventually, that would be too theme-y.
