Nipple On Fire!!!

Okay so mamas please do not tell me to research some old posts -_- I've done that and haven't found a thing pertaining to my burning nipples!!! So my nipple particularly the right one has been giving me hell it burns so freaking bad I want to like cut it off. Nothing is wrong with it physically from the outside its not being irritated by my bra or shirts because when I take it out lol it's still on fire. I need help ladies what does this mean?!?!

My next appointment is Aug 13 but that can't come soon enough the way my nipples feel. It happens to the left one on and off but the right one it's almost all day for it.

Re: Nipple On Fire!!!

  • Is this your first pregnancy? My first time around I had this happen in the second tri and yes, it is very painful and annoying. My MW told me that some women get this the first time around and that it's the nipple getting ready to open up all the tiny holes to feed the baby. Not everyone experiences the pain.
As long as it isn't very red, warm, or itching really badly, it's nothing to worry about.

  • I have this happen all the time it's like it's going to shoot fire.

For future reference the symptoms thread is a good spot for questions like this. Boobs, nipples, nausea, potty problems, and other joys of pregnancy get talked about all day :)

"Really. I first started experiencing it at sbout 5 months in to my pregnancy. When I finally spoke of the throbbing, burning pain, I was told some women experienced that as their milk came in, and that it would fade. I knew that this level of intense pain just couldn't be 'normal', so I started researching online. It took me several hours of digging to turn up the information on Raynaud's/vasospasm of the nipple. My OB had never heard of it. She talked to another OB and that doctor told her she'd had a few patients with it over the years, but it was rare. I was referred to a lactation consultant who said my symptoms were characteristic of Raynaud's and recommended a medication(nifedipine) that I can't take while I'm pregnant. I have to wait until I'm breastfeeding. Meanwhile, I suffer.

What are the symptoms of Raynaud's or vasospasm of the nipple?
1-Extreme burning pain, the kind of nipple-on-fire pain that has you crying hysterically, wakes you up at night, doesn't respond to Tylenol, and makes you wish you could take drugs, drink alcohol, or knock your head against a wall until you find oblivion.
2-Extremely hard, puckered nipples and areolae, as if you'd been exposed to intense cold.
3-A blanching (whitening) of the tips of the nipples.
4-The areolae turn a very dark reddish, purplish, or bluish hue.
5-The edges of the aureolae sometimes turn a bright, angry red.
6-The pain lasts anywhere from just minutes, to over an hour."

Yes this is my first pregnancy. I've also read that it could be preparing for breastfeeding as well. This is one of the symptoms no one tells you about.

I have only 2 of those symptoms but this made me nervous so I'll be sure to bring attention to this at my appointment. Were you able to breastfeed successfully? It's also mainly just the tip nothing coming from the rest of the boob at all. One thing also my boobs have started back growing again when all this started happening.
  • I definitely have pain, I described the other day as someone stabbing my nipple - but I'm now glad that it's not as bad as described above. That sounds awful!
  • It's happened to me.. I alternate burning, stinging, itching, and numbness lol. It's all just part of the process. Soft silk/satin bra material helps me if I must put one on.
  • This happens to me normally a few times a day. It seems to kick into high gear when I'm really cold. Most of the time if I just try to warm up it goes away. However, there have been times when it's happened and I'm not cold at all. From what I can find on google it seems pretty normal. I'm a FTM, too.
  • I don't have any advise, but want to ask if I am the only one who read the title of this post to the tune of Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon?

  • Had this from day one.. when they are cold it feels like someone is holding a lighter to them. Heat up your bb's and it will go away, I had to go into the Lav on a plane last week to rub my nipples to warm them up, the pain gets pretty intense. Happens with all 3 pregnancys
  • The itchiness is awful and they are too tender to scratch!
  • So funny. I have had this symptom with all 3 pregnancies and thought I was just crazy because no one else seems to know what I'm talking about. It's mostly when I'm cold. I want to scream "my nipples are BURNING!" Must be something about the transition to "headlights" that causes it???
  • Hi, I haven't had burning but intends itching instead - not good. Just on my right side too weird! Nothing I've tried worked - it's insanely itchy like a mosquito bite! Grr but can't scratch too much as it sore too. This is no.4 bubba for me and o certainly don't recall it with the previous 3!
