Heart murmurs

Is anyone's LO dealing with a heart murmur? Or STM's, did your first have one? Did it go away? What caused it?

At his two month checkup the pediatrician heard the murmur and sent us for a echocardiogram. He just had it today and we are awaiting the results. The doctor didn't seem overly concerned and I know they can be common but he did mention they are sometimes caused by a hole in the heart. I am desperately trying not to google. We all know how that ends!! That's why I turn to you my fellow bump mamas! Any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Heart murmurs

  • Very very common.. No need to worry LO will grow out of it.. They do echoes to cover their their **sses .. Don't worry mama
  • Mine does but its from 2 holes. The weird thing is the ped says they usually grow out of it but my cardiologist acts like there is a very small time frame for it to fix itself so not sure who to believe. If its a hole and your lo isn't showing major signs try not to fret. One of the major signs would be rapid breathing and loss of appetite/no weight fain.

  • Just wondering... Did they not hear the murmur since birth???
  • No! He just heard it at the two month app. I found that odd too but he said they can sometimes miss it in the first few weeks as it's not as evident? Perhaps he doesn't want to admit his error but there was a separate pediatrician at the hospital who didn't hear it either. Oh and come to think of it another doctor in the practice saw him at his one month.
  • ^^exactly.. Guaranteed baby had the murmur since birth.. We tell our peds about a murmur on our newborns and they pretend they don't hear us.. It's not their "patients" .. And it's so common and not "critical"... I catch peds doing their hospital rounds... While assessing telling them they have an audible murmer ..they know and act like it means nothing at this stage.. (Is how the peds react).. But I guarantee if it was something to worry about it would be handled properly
  • Yes. Very common. I wouldn't stress about it.
  • Yes. Had it with DS1 from birth, nothing was done at first. Something about the sound of his at his 4 month had us sent directly to the children's hospital (sorry never understood quite why so can't explain now), even then his anatomy was perfect and all was well. He outgrew it. I remember being scared but ultimately it wasn't worth worrying about. I'd relax and assume its nothing as it almost always is. He'd have symptoms if it was an issue and they'll let you know if they find anything to worry about. They won't!

  • Same here. DS1 had a murmur that his ped noticed at his 2 month exam. She said it was probably nothing to worry about but suggested we get it checked out anyway. He had to get an echocardiogram done and we were scheduled to talk to a pediatric cardiologist once the results were in. The whole ordeal was more nerve wracking than it should've been. I ended up worrying anyway for nothing. While he did have a slight murmur the cardiologist didn't seem too concerned and said he'd eventually grow out of it. As long as your LO isn't showing major symptoms I'm sure he'll be fine.

LO doesn't but I've had a murmur from a hole in my heart since birth. It never went away but never grew either, and never interfered with my life. I just had it checked every 5 years as I was growing. No big deal!don't panic!
  • Yes, she still has it, she's 7 weeks.
  • Thanks everyone for your help. Still waiting for the results. I will keep you posted ☺️
  • My thoughts are with you! I was born with 8-12 holes and eventually had to have surgery. I don't tell you this to frighten you (though to a point I am sure it will) but to encourage you! I am a healthy woman who lives life without limitation! Plus just had a baby without complications! Praying your LO's murmur is nothing-but if it isn't, the cardiology advancements make it possible to live uninhibited! My thoughts are with you!
  • Our baby girl has been to the cardiologist a few times since birth (we're trying to determine whether she has my heart condition, which is genetic) and they heard a murmur at her last visit (she was just over 2 months). She got an echo the same day and luckily everything was fine - I guess because the echo was normal the murmur itself is nothing to worry about. Still waiting to get genetic testing results back to see about whether she has Long QT...

Hope you get good news back on the echo!
