3rd Trimester

Depression in the 3rd trimester

I have started to feel very emotional about being a Mom and find myself depressed and anxious. On top of this my husband and I might be moving in the next 2 months so I haven't set up a baby room. I just don't know what to do to feel better about all of this and to overcome my new fear of being a mom.

Re: Depression in the 3rd trimester

  • I had post partum anxiety after the birth of my son, and up until that point in my life if never had any issues with depression or anxiety. My anxiety made me feel like I was on a roller coaster emotionally all the time, and I desperately wanted to get off. After six months of hoping I just had a bad case of "baby blues" I finally told my midwife I needed help. She put me on a low dose of an antidepressant and it changed my life. I'm so glad I got help. I only ended up using it for about eight months, and when I weaned myself off of it, I found I was much better and able to cope on my own.

Pregnancy and childbirth are incredible and powerful and they can also be traumatic and stressful. The hormonal changes your body goes through can make you feel like you don't recognize yourself anymore.

I don't think medications like antidepressants are generally recommended in the third trimester, but if you are still having a hard time coping post birth, I would just say don't wait to get help. Make sure
Your provider knows NOW that you're concerned so they document it in your chart.

Moving is also horribly stressful and the fact that you can't create a physical space for your baby right now is probably making it hard for you to emotionally create that space for them to. I hope when you are settled you find things more manageable.
