can you diet and bf? nft.

Re: can you diet and bf? nft.

  • In a word... no...  there is a special WW for BFing women, but i's an extra 10 points a day (or is it 12)...  Your body actually requires more calories to BF than it does to be pg...  You need at least an extra 500 calories a day to keep up your supply.  Most women that diet notice a nose dive in their supply..  I wan't eating much after Luca was born due to stress.   The LC asked if I was eating enough..  I hadn't thought about it..  once I picked up the calories, my supply improved....  Not sure about when the child is older, but you body needs calories to make milk...  and what you eat effects the quality of your milk.

for me, this makes it a yes. you can diet- you can do WW. 12 points gives almost half again as many points and makes for a pretty considerable amount of food.

however, i don't recommend starting the diet until your BFing is pretty established.

  • I eat a lot now.  dieting for me is not eating a lot - before I got pregnant I was in the business of losing weight.  I ate about 1300 cal a day.  I have no idea what I eat now but I'm sure it's not 1300 cal.  especially after the horrid holidays.

ok - so there is a "diet" for girls like me!

  • I don't know the answer to this question for certain and can only share my experience regarding BFing and dieting.  When I tried reducing my caloric intake about 3 months after delivering, my supply was impacted significantly.  I know this because I pumped exclusively.  So the answer for me personally was no.

  • I couldn't diet and maintain supply.  I don't typically over eat, I just don't lose weight without exercise and reduced caloric intake.
  • I did WW while I BF Joshua and never had any problems.

  • I think if you just try to eat healthier and don't worry about how much calories that you can lose weight when BFing. I did not diet, but I lost about 15 of my pre-pg weight while BFing (over maybe 6mo). I ate normal stuff, just tried to make smart choices (100calorie oreo bar instead of giant slab of chocolate cake). But don't cut back too much on fat, you need it for the milk.

  • I also did WW while breastfeeding and it helped tremendously... Too bad I didn't stick to it. hehe
