Similac and Green Poop

My DS is on similac and I breast feed also. My mom is concerned that his poop is green but I'm thinking it's totally normal due to the iron in the similac. Any other babies have green poop and is drinking Similac??

Re: Similac and Green Poop

  • LO is on Similac and her poop first thing in the morning is very green but the rest of the day it looks just like it did when I was breastfeeding. So from my short experience as a mama, I'd say several colors can be normal.
  • My LO is only formula and his ranges between yellow and green. Very normal said the maternal health nurse. It's the iron in the formula.

  • My l/o is on Similiac exclusively and hers is a greenish/brownish color. She only poops every other day though.
  • Green Similac poops here!
  • We're on Gerber and its usually green sometimes a blue tint eek
Our lo poops once a day sometimes twice. Is that normal for anyone exclusively fornulA?
  • We're on Gerber soothe, and it's usually blueish/green and then yellow. Pretty nasty, but I assume normal. She poops once a day.

  • @katyertl twice a day! We're lucky if LO poops every day. We got told not worry until he hasn't popped for 3 days.
  • We're on Gerber soothe, and it's usually blueish/green and then yellow. Pretty nasty, but I assume normal. She poops once a day.

One time with soothe I changed a diaper that was green then ended yellow. Looked like a weird tie die experiment Lol

Does it take your Lo a lot of grunting and effort to poop? Sometimes our little girl will start grunting around 3 am and not be able to get it out until like 7/8. Granted she isn't awake at 3 she's doing it in her sleep but still. She's almost 9 weeks and I'm wondering when it gets easier for them to poop

@katyertl We've been supplementing with Similac Sensitive for the past week and LO has had a couple green poops, but I've also been really concerned with him crying and pushing to actually poop. I talked to his dr yesterday who said he really shouldn't be crying when he poops, but it might be his little body getting used to the formula. He told me to give it one more week and if it doesn't improve we probably will need to change the formula.
  • @katyertl It seems to take zero effort for her. It just flows freely. Haha! I will say she almost always poops WHILE eating. Not sure if that relaxes her or what...?
  • Hmm yeah our girl grunts a lot and we help her by pushing her legs up to her stomach. Sometimes she does cry but sometimes it does come out when she's eating. She has her two month appointment next Monday so I'll talk with the Ped!
  • We're on day 5 of supplementing with Similac -- starting with 1 feeding/day. On day 2 LO had a green poop. Now, we're on day 3 with no pooping and we've been used to at least 2+ poops/day. I called her ped today and they advised me that if she doesn't poop some time tomorrow, to call back. Here's to hoping LO poops SOON!!

Always listen to your doctor obviously. But I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Our LO went 6 days without pooping when she was 1 week old. The doctor wanted to check her out to make sure her stomach wasn't hard (like if there was something blocking I think?), but he said they don't intervene unless they go over a week without pooping. Maybe other doctors are different though. Hope your LO poop soon!

  • Funny you mention it, LO's poop was a little green today too. Ugh and they are smelling more potent with age! Yikes!
  • We get one epic poop a day, typically in the evening... What joy!
