TTC after 35

Looooong cycles (child mentioned)

I had long-ish cycles (between 32 and 37 days) before my daughter was born. I weaned her this spring, and my cycles returned. But this is ridiculous -- they keep getting longer. Yesterday was CD 44 before I finally got AF this morning. I wonder what causes long cycles, and if I need to speak to my doctor about it? Is there something that can be done to shorten them? I turn 39 this month, and I hate to think that I only have one chance to conceive every 44 days, as opposed to one chance every 28.

Re: Looooong cycles (child mentioned)

  • I too have long cycles (between 34-45 days). Mine is because of PCOS. I also don't ovulate every cycle so it really drops my chance of conception way down. My obgyn said if you have a cycle past 40 days, it means you didn't ovulate that time. Some women have had luck taking Vitex (a natural supplement) - this didn't help me but I've read many testimonies about it. You could also go to your obgyn or RE and have them run some basic tests. I think it's worth getting checked out to make sure you are even ovulating. Good luck!!

  • My cycles are regular, but I take maca (cd 1-14 only) and chasteberry/vitex and I've read about them regulating or shortening cycles. Vitex is strong and can have some unpleasant side effects. I am ramping up to full dose during our final months of TTC naturally before moving on to IVF.
