Cloth Diapering Advice

I'm considering taking the plunge into cloth diapering. I have done almost too much research and have decided on gDiapers to start because they have disposable, flushable insert options for them. (We started looking into it since we will possibly be backpacking with our LO and carrying all those disposables out could get heavy!) So I'm wondering if any of you who have cloth diapered for awhile have any suggestions. I'm hoping it will be an easy transition and I'll be able to stick with it!

Re: Cloth Diapering Advice

  • G diapers are kinda hit or miss. A few people who like them really love them, otherwise (especially the disposable inserts) they have all the cons of CDing AND all the cons of disposables without any real benefits. For back packing, their inserts can't really weigh much less than regular disposables.

Anyway, now that I totally rained on your parade (sorry!) I love cloth diapers! We do mostly pockets, and some prefolds and covers. Not hard at all! Just jump in, the transition shouldn't be too hard :)

  • @honkytonk_kid Thanks! I did see some reviews of gDiapers that pretty much said what you said, so I just bought a few covers and inserts and we will see what happens. I have seen better reviews for some diapers, so I'm willing to try other brands if I like the idea but want to go with something different. The compostable/flushable disposables have the allure of being able to actually appropriately dispose of the inserts while on the backpacking trip, using pit toilets if they are available or burying as you would normal human waste on such trips (gross, yes, but practical!). Since this is my first, I'm hoping the cost savings will be seen with subsequent children someday.
  • I don't know about g diapers but I love my cloth diapers. We've been using pocket ones while at home and disposables for long days out and I really prefer the cloth ones

  • My little one has been in cloth since he was 6 weeks old and I love them. We use BumGenius 4.0 ... You can change how much you stuff in the pocket to change the absorbency. We still use the infant inserts and change often and use the one size insert at night in a effort to help him sleep longer. Washing isn't bad at all. Depending on diaper content we wash either every day or every other day. Even my hubby doesn't mind helping with the wash. My daycare uses them so the only time we've used disposables was on a recent airplane ride and it was literally just the ride. Put the disposable on at the airport and put the cloth on when we landed. One huge plus in my book is my little guy hasn't ever had a sign of diaper rash since we started using cloth! And the money saved by not buying disposables is great too!
  • I have a long sleeper! She goes down at 8 and stays down until about 7 or 8. So I'm concerned about leaks at night. I've read that Rumparooz G2 works really well, so I might get a couple to use strictly at night (they're expensive, so I'd rather not get too many). From what I'm discovering, it seems most people kind of mix and match rather than really showing brand loyalty to one style or brand. The interesting thing is now a couple of my friends might switch. They just sort of needed someone to test the waters first!
  • I love my flip diaper covers. They work with anything, prefolds, fitteds and I love their stay dry inserts. They actually sell a disposable liner that you can compost too. We might use those on a vacation. I strongly recommend getting a few different kinds in general before you get all of one kind because people have different babies and preferences, then get more of what works for you.
  • Wanted to add that we have a stash that is a mixture of pockets bum genius 4.0 prefolds and stay dry inserts with flip diapers and a few all in ones and we might get some bamboo fitteds for overnight, so try to be flexible as you're buying. About 4 gdiapers or flips would work for camping and you can try other diapers for the rest of your time. I'm so glad we went with cloth and we're super lazy people. Good luck!
  • I've been using gDiapers for about 3 months (LO is now 4 months) and we've really liked them. The thing I love is that you don't have to wash the ENTIRE pant after a diaper change. We are usually able to rotate between two covers for a good day before one of the covers gets dirty and needs to go in the wet bag. We have 6 covers, at least 12 pouches and 12 cloth inserts. I do laundry probably every three days. With the cloth inserts I also use cloth liners that you put on top and are flushable so you catch most of the poopy mess there. Then I use the disposables mainly for nighttime and when we are out and about. I've got a subscription to Amazon for the disposables so they end up costing about the same as regular diapers but I only get a new supply (4 packages) every few months since I mainly use the cloth during the day. I know the cost is probably about the same right now but once baby number 2 comes along we will be all set. Let me know if you have any questions!!
  • I just got all the different brands to try and will see how things go! Right now I have used the Rumparooz and they're pretty great. She wore one overnight with no leaks at all, and also has not had blow outs (which had been pretty standard for her until I started using Huggies Little Movers). I also have a Flip cover with 3 inserts and 3 gdiapers with 6 inserts. Not too sure if I'll keep the gdiapers only because they're sized and I've heard that their inserts are not too great. But I have also heard rave reviews, so I think I'll just give each one a good try before really deciding. The nice part about Flips is they require the same care as the Rumparooz I have, which should make laundry easier. I did stock up on Rumparooz because they were having an amazing sale and pocket diapers do seem easier for those caring for her during the three days I'm at work. But I'd like to have something less bulky for days out, so I'm sure I'll probably get Flips or gdiapers or something that works for me. Thanks for all the advice and recommendations!
