Discontinued vs recalled items

I found a swing on craigslist that us want but when I looked up the reviews on amazon I noticed that it is discontinued. What is the difference between a discontinued item and an item that has been recalled. Basically I want to know if a discontinued item is safe for my baby. It might have been discontinued because the manufacturer came out with a newer model. I would do a little more research to see if that's the case. I figure it wouldn't hurt to possibly call their tech support or hotline number and ask them.

Discontinued could mean they have newer technology, newer prints, the company went out of business, etc. We have that swing in my church nursery and it has always worked just fine. If an item is recalled, it will be listed in CPSC database: https://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/
