TTC After a Loss

The Great Sperm Race

I know everyone has been talking about TCOYF book.    A friend of mine recommended a video on YouTube called The Great Sperm Race.  It's about an hour or so long.  Each part is about 10 minutes and there are six parts. It's pretty interesting and delves into the facts about sperm.  I know as women we mostly concentrate on our ovulations, but ya know after watching this video I learned that by the time the sperm gets in near proximity of the egg, there are only two or three at the most left out of the millions that started out on that journey.

The video uses human actors to play the parts of sperm and their journey to the egg.  It's a pretty neat documentary.

For a little humor in the first part you will see a "sperm" crocheting/knitting.   That made me giggle.

Re: The Great Sperm Race

  • I watched that, too.  It's a good movie, but it actually made me less optimistic about getting pregnant.  It makes everything seem like such a longshot!  What if I don't have enough CM to get the sperm up to the cervix??  They need their CM ladders!

  • I watched this a couple of weeks ago and it gave me some serious anxiety :(
  • I watched it last night with DH! I liked it a lot! Yes, it sounds like a 1 in a million shot, but good thing that DHs have 250 Million sperm for every ejaculate! That's 250 shots hehe! I like to be optimistic about it :)

  • It is an extremely good documentary. As for it being anxiety-inducing, remember that while only a few sperm make it to the 'safe zone' of the fallopian tube, they can last several days there and they tend to be the strongest ones. This is actually encouraging news, rather depressing, I think.

I made DH watch it. Can't say that he loved it but he definitely learned some new things. Now he seems to be more open to timing sex for the best chance of conceiving again. After our loss last year, he wanted to "let the chips fall where they may". But now that it has been a year and no BFP, I want to actively try. If we don't conceive at least we'll be able to bring my charts to an RE to start looking into what the reason may be.

I do sometimes think of scenes in the film after we have sex during my FW. Silently rooting his sperm on "come on, climb the ladder of EWCM!" :))
