UTI

I am pretty sure I have a uti right now. I'm 27 weeks. Should I go to the doctors to get medicine or try to cure it at home with cranberry juice??

Re: UTI

  • So annoying! I get these frequently. Sometimes if you feel them come early enough, you can flush them out on your own. I find drinking a ton of water with lemon and taking cranberry extract pills work best. Drink lots of clear fluids and stay away from sugary stuff - that will just feed the infection. If the problem persists, definitely go see your doctor. They'll give you some antibiotics that will cure it quickly! Otherwise, you can risk getting a kidney infection.

Doctor's, stat. Cranberry juice is mostly for prevention. I get them all the time, and if you don't treat them right away, they can give you a fever and become a kidney infection. (That happened to me twice, pre-pregnancy.). You also don't need that extra discomfort right now! If you are hesitant about going to a doctor because of hassle or expense, you can just go to a Minute Clinic or whatever at a CVS or Walgreens or the like. I usually do that with UTIs, because they are cheaper and the wait time is much less.
  • DOCTOR. Seriously why is this a question? :-w
  • I'd treat. I had an asymptomatic one and felt like hell for weeks but no actual uti symptoms. You might think it's cured and then have to deal with it right before the baby is born which might lead to thrush. I did probiotics with my antibiotics and tons of lemon juice in my water.
  • I'm not even 100% sure if that's what it is. I have to pee like every 10 min which is a symptom of a uti, gestational diabetes , and just of pregnancy lol so I'm not sure.
  • @Kbhunter you don't need to answer if you feel it's a silly question. Keep it moving! Thanks!
  • I would get with the doctor then just to be sure. You don't want the symptoms to continue if you can easily treat it w/ an antibiotic. I've had several this pregnancy, so the doctor has me on an antibiotic constantly now.  :-/

  • I agree with PP -- a possible infection = doctor's call/visit. I think its silly to mess with these things on your own especially when pregnant
  • I have one right now and I didn't know it till the doctor told me.  I thought all the peeing was because of just being pregnant, so when I started to pee even more, I didn't really think much of it.  My doctor caught it in a routine urine test.  She put me on an antibiotic right away because she said that they can get worse and cause problems if the infection gets worse.  Apparently they are fairly common during pregnancy, so if you suspect one, I would follow up on it with the doctor because you may not be that far off.  Good luck!
  • Ok thank you everyone
  • Since you're not positive you have a UTI, they may have you come in to test for it, but I'd definitely call in. Sometimes they'll even send in the Rx for you, without you coming into the office (usually, if they've treated you for a UTI before). We have to pee too often as is, don't make yourself suffer through a possible UTI too! :)

  • Sometimes this happens to me! The first time, I thought it was a UTI but it was just pressure from the baby and stretching. I called my doctor and he just filled a prescription of antibiotics without me coming in. They are pretty common during pregnancy. The next day I was fine lol kept the antibiotics for future use. Cranberry juice will help if you catch it early enough but it won't cure it. Plus you should drink the sugar free juice. Sugar will feed the bacteria. I used to get repeat UTI's before I got pregnant. It was horrible! I started taking cranberry tablets before bed (I get the kind that you take once a day) and haven't had one since. Hope its just the pressure from a growing baby and that you get well soon! :)
  • Call your doctor ASAP. UTIs and other infections can cause contractions.

That's what happened to me. I was more tired than usual, peeing a bunch and the only thing i feel like should have tipped me off was that my pee was never as light as usual even though i felt i was getting plenty of fluids (it's so hot out i just figured i was having a hard time keeping up) . They put me on macrobid and within two days my pee was clear again and by the end of the 7 days i felt physically better too.
  • Cranberry juice actually helps me a lot. I drink a glass every morning for prevention. The pills do nothing. You have to be sure to buy 100% cranberry juice and NOT cranberry juice cocktail, which is loaded with sugar.
  • call your doctor and cranberry juice might not be the best option right now as it contains a lot of sugar  and idk how your levels are or if you are dealing with GD it can trigger something

  • I just had one, I noticed no symptoms but my doctor told me I had one last visit. I would go in soon though like a PP said it can cause preterm labor and if it gets worse could infect the placenta (happened to my moms friend) All not good things! Best to get the antibiotics and not bother trying to flush out on your own
  • Cranberry juice will not cure a UTI if you already have one, it only helps prevent them. I'm with everyone else - call your doctor before it gets worse.

  • Doctor, definitely. UTI can trigger preterm labor and other problems, like kidney infections.
  • Doctor!!! I came down with a uti Saturday and went to the doctor early Sunday morning because it had progressed so much in just a few hours my kidneys had started to hurt!
  • I had a UTI that came up in the regular visit urine test - I had no symptoms! Make sure you're feeding good bacteria back into your body if you go on antibiotics though!!!
  • I'm not even 100% sure if that's what it is. I have to pee like every 10 min which is a symptom of a uti, gestational diabetes , and just of pregnancy lol so I'm not sure.
GO! I've had the feeling about 10 times, once I was correct, the rest were actually yeast infections.

  • I was mostly concerned because infections like this can be very dangerous during pregnancy and if it's a true UTI there is no self treating.
I wouldn't mess around and I would have got a quick and easy urine test at the doc to be sure.
Not a silly question I was just concerned you would think twice about just ruling it out with your doctor. Cranberry juice will do nothing.
I have a long history of these stupid infections. Hope you got it figured out.
  • i had a UTI in my first trimester of pregnancy and didn't even know it until i went to the doctor one weekend . go get it checked out , you want to make sure you're in good health for baby's sake .

I had a urine sample taken Friday and they found bacteria in my urine. I'm now on amoxicillin 500mg, 3 times daily for 5 days. So go to the dr you may need antibiotics to clear it up.
  • I just had a UTI. They treated it like a STAT situation with priority in the lab and doctors office. The antibiotics were not ones I normally get but they did the trick. They had me come back and make sure the infection was cleared after my round of medication was over.

If a UTI progresses during pregnancy it can be dangerous. Hormones open all that stuff up so the risk is higher than normal too.
