Wide glider with tall back

hi mommies,
I am expecting baby number 2 and am hoping to get a new glider for the nursery. My husband and I are both tall, so I am hoping for a high back so we can lean our heads back during those new baby night shifts but also a wide seat/arms to help make nursing more comfortable. Our semi coushioned glider we used for our first baby was a bit narrow and made it awkward to nurse my baby without having my elbows up high on the armrests. Just thought I'd check here to see if anyone has any dream gliders that fit that description. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Re: Wide glider with tall back

  • Mine is awesome. It's Amish made though, so definitely a dream rocker. It was my splurge for our nursery with ds. Let me go take a pic.
  • Loading the player...
  • We had a faux leather neck roll on it and that is what did colored the top. Not happy about it but the store closed so there was nothing I could do about it. They are special ordered so if you are interested get to an Amish store asap so you have it before baby.
  • Not a "glider" per say but our general recliner in our living room was where I lived while I was nursing. We have a normal "nursery" glider in the nursery but it's only used for bedtime stories now. General recliner that rocks fits all your description. Plus added bonus, if LO falls asleep and you don't want them to wake up moving, you can just kick it up and LO can sleep chest-to-chest. Those were some of my favorite moments. Hope that helps!

We got pottery barn kids Comfort Swivel Rocker in the large size. I am only 5'4" but my husband is 6'5" so he really needed an oversize and tall chair to be comfortable. He loves that chair (and he has spent hours in it trying to get our first to sleep for months and sometimes would fall asleep with him in the chair) and now it's perfect for me and my 2 yr old to sit next to each other and read together.
When I was in there recently to pick something up for a friend, I did notice that now they have like 5 million different options that are even prettier than what was available 2 years ago, so if you are going for a certain look, they may have it in a similar size as the large comfort swivel rocker. I would also recommend the ottoman.
As far as fabric goes, I got the every day suede cover for it, my first has thrown up on it, spit up on it, I spilled regular milk, and breast milk, and also accidentally put a pen mark, and everything comes off. kinda like microfiber.

ETA: I could also fit myself and a boppy around me, with the baby on it, without getting the armrest in the way.

I am really kicking myself because I pushed to get a glider with DS2. Now I'm really wishing we would have saved the $$ and bought a rocking recliner. I hate that I can't really lean back in the glider and the motion makes me nauseous right now. It wasn't near as comfortable to nurse in as I had hoped and now that it is housed in our living room I just wish it was something more fitting.

ETA: I had also wanted to get something with a dark fabric so that it would last longer and not look so dingy, but I settled and ended up with cream colored fabric. It's only a year old and looks dirty even though it's clean.

  • My husband and are are both 5'11". I couldn't believe how tiny most gliders felt when we shopped for them back in 2012. We got a Best Chairs brand reclining swivel glider. It's the nicest chair on the house! We bought it from a store called USA Baby; they had the most in-store selection for is to sit in them and try it out.

  • We bought a rocking recliner too for our last nursery and it's already moved into the room where we will put baby number two. Best decision ever. Ds had lots of Basel drainage issues when he was younger which resulted in me holding him upright when he slept. That recliner was a lifesaver. It was comfortable and still rocked but never hurt my back or head. It also had the ottoman to it that came in and out and didn't take up additional space in the room either.

We got a Dutailier extra wide from Buy, Buy Baby almost 7 years ago when we had DS. It is high backed and very wide. It was great for DH, who is super broad, and great for me to use the Boppy while nursing. I highly suggest the gliding ottoman, it makes a huge difference in comfort at 2:00am. Both of our parents had saved our rocking chairs from when we were babies. They felt tiny and hard compared to our heavenly glider.

We have a swiveling rocker/recliner from Best chairs as well. It doesn't give me enough back support and I'm too short to rock it easily. Also, we had an issue with Best furniture. We bought a Best couch at a local furniture store. The couch stuffing went flat very quickly. The store came out and diagnosed manufacturer defect, they replaced the padding with no problem. Within a month, it happened again. We called again and the store said it was the same thing. When they contacted Best about it, Best refunded the couch but asked that we don't purchase another Best product ever again. We were furious. We have had our chair for about 5 years, we bought the couch because DH loves the chair. We did nothing wrong, it was a manufacturer issue. They obviously don't stand behind their products. We were extremely disappointed with the company. The store, thankfully, was wonderful and we are very happy with our new couch.
  • We got an expensive Rocker/Glider from Babies R Us 2 years ago when I was due with my 1st and I am glad we splurged. It's super comfy, all padded and we spent many nights with a  baby on our chest sleeping in that rocker. It also reclines.
